My ring is falling apart...

MissShandi, on May 27, 2015 at 1:50 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 5

Okay that's kind of an exaggeration. But... here's the story.

Last Wednesday I was playing with my ring, and looked down and noticed that two of my pave stones had fallen out! One on each side, and they were both right where the stones meet the white gold band. So I call the insurance company (God bless jeweler's mutual) and they say to choose a jeweler and they can bill them. So I do that, stop by the jeweler to have him look at it. He cleaned it for me, and gave it back since my engagement pics were the next day, and told me he would call me when he heard from the insurance company and i could drop it off again. The next day I notice that two more stones have fallen out! They were definitely there when I left his shop, but I'm wondering if maybe the cleaning knocked it loose. I don't know. Has anyone else had this problem? Can they go around and tighten all the little prongs when he replaces the stones?

It's from Zales, btw. If that means anything. I love it though!

I would take it back to the jeweler ASAP. I had a prong rebuilt on my e-ring, but it's just a simple 3 stone ring. I'm not sure how it would work for a pave setting, but there must be something they can do!

Do you have insurance through Zales? When did you get it? Has it been getting maintenance cleanings?

I'd go to Zales and see what they can do. With pave stones sometimes one holds in another. It sounds to me like one got loose, so the others did too.

I had a bit of the same issue....The first time my ring went into a cleaner a stone fell out!! I had it fixed, but the next time I had it cleaned the same thing happened!! I am no longer putting my ring thru a machine,...I asked a local jeweler here (who we love) how to clean it without touching the diamonds and she suggested Scrubbing Bubbles!! I Googled it to see if others had tried it and I saw only positive comments, so I gave it a shot and it was so sparkly!! I just sprayed it on the ring, let it sit for a minute, and then rinsed!!

My FH bought the warranty through Zales when he bought it, but then I ended up getting the separate Jeweler's Mutual insurance later on. I have just heard so many horror stories about Zales sending the rings off and then switching the stones. I don't trust them and I don't feel comfortable with leaving it with them for 3-4 weeks. So it was worth it to me to pay the $40 premium for separate insurance so i could get it serviced where i wanted. I haven't taken it in for any kind of maintenance yet because I just got it in March.

@STar that makes sense that they would hold one another in the ring.

It's a shame when you could have bought a much better quality ring--than Zales sold you in the first place.

People need to find the BEST wholesale diamond jewelers in their area, check the reviews--and go through them. Most are not going to be in a mall, in fact, you'll find many are in secure offices in high rise buildings(!) and they are going to deal with very high end jewelry, and the better diamonds--for much lower prices! They also do their own settings on the premises--and you can be sure that you will NOT be losing any diamonds.

Had my fiance not fallen for the same ruse with a small jeweler, I could have gotten my identical setting, by the same maker--with a better diamond--for $2K LESS than what he paid for mine. It's for sure that we will be purchasing the wedding band and his ring from this wholesale diamond seller and jeweler.
