My ring band broke!

Leslie, on June 27, 2019 at 10:31 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 21
I woke up this morning and felt my engagement ring pinching my finger, it turns out the band is cracked! I’m trying not to freak out too much, but I’m a little stressed as to how to go about fixing it.
My fiancée got it from samuels jewelers which has since closed, am I looking at crazy prices since I have to take it to another jeweler to be fixed?

My fiancee and I are long distance right now and it kills me to not be able to wear my ring for any period of time. Has anyone had this happen before? How long did it take to get it repaired?

I'd probably suggest going to a local jeweler and getting an estimate. I cant think it'll be awful.

Definitely find a local jeweler that does repair and get an estimate. I can honestly say I have not had a ring do that before, but I am sure that it is not unheard of. If he had to have the ring sized they may have weakened the metal a bit too much. I am not sure of a price range fixing it would be in but worst case scenario you would have to get a new band and setting for the stone.

I once had a 10K gold ring that had previously been sized crack like this, right at the very bottom. It really wasn’t that much to get it fixed and didn’t take long at all.

    It's going to be ok.
The ring I gave my FW was my grandmother's and needed repair and cleaning. I took it to a local jewelry repair shop that does in house work. This is key. They were able to add extra gold to thicken the band (She doesn't have thin fingers) to help it from cracking again at my request. Also did a fantastic pro cleaning job. I paid around $240 which I told them I thought was a little pricey but the work was fabulous, done the same day, and the ring even though a true vintage ring, looked brand new. The repair and extra gold was about $190 if that helps.

Try looking for local that will do it in house, you don't want it shipped some where to possibly get lost!

    It’s white gold.

It actually needs to be replated too but I was anxious about giving the ring up for a little bit....guess I don’t have a choice now, lol

That’s reassuring! I know I have plenty of time to get it repaired before the wedding, I just hate the idea of not having it for an extended period

This makes me feel so much better! My initial thought/worry was that it might be longer and more expensive than that so thank you!

Not wanting to turn the ring over to the jeweler is understandable. Maybe you can go pick out a silicone ring or fake ring that is similar to yours before hand. That way you still have something to wear while yours is getting fixed.

There are jewelers that do onsite repair the same day depending on how much they have to do on it. Call around and ask and get prices. Has it been resized? I’ve never had a band break. Good luck.

I had to get my ring band repaired also. It belonged to my FH's great-grandmother and was partially broken. We went to a local jewelry store that does repairs on-site and they were amazing! They fixed it, resized it, and strengthened my prongs for the diamonds. It was about $200 and was done in about a week. My advice is to find a local store that does repairs.

After I had mine resized, I noticed that one of the stones was missing from the side of the band. The jeweler warned me that might happen with the style of ring I had but it was either risk it or not be able to wear my ring. When I noticed it, my jeweler was closed as they were moving so I went to another local jeweler to have it fixed and it took a week. I hated being without my ring!!

I might try to do that today! I had a promise ring for a couple years before this one (all of our stuff is in storage right now so I can’t wear that for now unfortunately) so this would be the first time not having a ring on in a long time.

It was resized so after some reading, it looks like that’s what caused the crack. Thank you

Yup, it's the resizing. It's not abnormal and it's easy to repair, although you'll probably have to give the ring up for a bit. Depending on the type of metal it is, it shouldn't be too expensive.

I got my ring from Robbins Brothers. Even though it is a chain they do all their work onsite. A few weeks ago I noticed on of the tiny diamonds on my setting had fallen off. I took it back to them and in 2 days they had replaced it and re-plated it, it looked better than brand new.

Also don't sleep with your jewelry on anymore.

I took it in to a repair store and it wasn’t too pricey to get it fixed and replied. Plus I get to pick it up this afternoon so I won’t be without it for long!

    Thank you all!
