I'm slightly worried you just had prom (as your wedding date is 5 years out???) and since your dress is still in online inventory.

If you're not getting married for 6 years, it's way too early to worry about this. You might be able to, but it depends on how formal your wedding is, and what the venue is like. Also, in 6 years, there's a good chance the dress won't fit or will look dated.

Why would you want to?? Your wedding is in like, 6 years. I sure as hell don't fit into my prom dress from 4 years ago. Tastes change, bodies grow. Styles will probably change a lot by then.

You can get married in whatever you want. Whether it will fit with your venue/ overall vibe is another question. And keep in mind that your tastes will likely change in the next 5 years. Until about 2 years ago I thought for sure I'd wear a halter dress. Then I got interested in off-the-shoulder gowns and that's what I have now. Good thing I didn't buy something years ago!

I honestly would never wear my prom dress again, it's not remotely bridal feeling. There's no rule saying you couldn't if that's what you're worried about but if you are truly planning on getting married in 2023 then you have a LOT of time to save for a more traditional gown if that's something you want. Your taste and body will likely change quite a bit in that time frame as well. I know my own body has changed tremendously since prom.

    ETA: words.

I think it's a very nice, sentimental idea, mainly if you are marrying your high school sweetheart. It's extremely early to seriously consider wearing it. Your mind might change. There is nothing wrong with thinking about it tho <3

Go to and graduate from college. Your perspectives on many things, not just whether or not to wear your prom dress to your wedding, are likely to change during early adulthood.

A whole lot could change in 5 years, especially as you loose insane teenager metabolism and hit your midtwenties. Revisit all of this in 2022.

By the way, I am wearing my old prom dress to my wedding. It's got a lot of special significance for me and FI, so it's not a weird thing to do in and of itself. The decision was also prompted by about whether I wanted a proper dress or splurgey Anthropologie coffee table for $1500. The coffee table won out. You'll have those weird impulses in your future as you begin to nest.

Okay, I have a few things to say to this... especially after reading comments. Once you're engaged you want to plan right away. It's a happy time and you have every right to do so. I am currently in college and my fiancé and I were talking about getting married when I graduated pharmacy school. We even picked out date to be 1-2-23 to mock our 12-23 anniversary. My major changed though and I'm still going to graduate, just sooner. 2020. I was planning when it was that far out. I wasn't searching for vendors or anything but details like that sure. I will say, try on some wedding dresses when it gets closer to time. I did this a year out and I STILL got looks. "Oh you have so much time" even six months out now people are still saying "you have plenty of time" it really depends. To have everything exactly how we want it, we probably should have planned 1.5 years out. Because we have to pay some of the wedding expenses. Save your dress. But don't short yourself the experiences. It's your wedding. You can do whatever you want. Money will be tight for us but we managed to crunch the numbers and we can afford an apartment with our current jobs. We just have to cut other things. Maybe you could do something similar and get married a little earlier. The wait is killer. But it's fun. Congratulations!

You definitely can get married in your prom dress. You have LOTS of time to decide that. Sleep on it. Do think about it every once in a while, and make tentative plans, and when you're a lot closer to time decide whether you want to or not.

My guess is you wouldn't touch your prom dress in 5 years!

Put it in the back of your closet if you must.
