My mother is pushing for an aisle runner...

Julie, on July 5, 2017 at 7:39 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 22

Hey! Hope you all enjoyed your 4th of July.

So, I'm planning to have an outdoor ceremony at an arboretum. the space we have is just basically in a field with grass and trees. My mom is really pushing to get an aisle runner so the girls dresses don't get dirty, which I get. But when I think of an aisle runner, I just think of a large piece of material floating on top of the grass. I feel like it can easily bunch and lead to a tripping hazard. She actually already bought one because she thought it was a good deal, she said it's some sort of fabric. But please correct me if I'm wrong. I am totally ignorant when it comes to these things. I've only been to one wedding where they had an aisle runner and it was paper on a hard floor. I hated it it, you can hear the crunching when people were walking down and didn't even liked how it looked. So, I guess I just have a bad taste in my mouth. So just looking for some input.

Thanks!!

Outside, they are almost always awkward and you're right; they are hazardous. You could put down a strip of astroturf or carpet first, but most of my outside brides use petals

If it is grass then I would put an idle runner just put weights or something to hold it down on the sides. My ceremony space is outside at my venue but it's a brick isle path and it's pretty so I don't want to cover it. For grass I definitely would have something down

I agree it's a safety hazard! My wedding is outside (we're almost date twins!!) and we aren't having one. We will line the aisle with rose petals and walk in the grass. If she's concerned about dresses getting dirty the only way to fix that is have short dresses. You can't put a runner everywhere!

We weren't even allowed to use an aisle runner for our outdoor ceremony because the venue was concerned about safety. If it's just on grass, I don't think it'd be a good idea to have it. Not to mention, if you don't want one you don't have to have one.

My venue actively discouraged us from having an aisle runner on the grass - she said it made it hard to walk, and that people tended to slip.

We did an outdoor wedding and I tested a runner for kicks. I quickly found out how easy it was to trip even in flats. (but that could just be me) So we just did rose petals. Hard to trip on those.

Yeah, I agree with you OP, this sounds like a bunched up messy hazard. How likely is it that dresses will get dirty? If it's raining or muddy you'll likely need to use your plan b anyways right?

Haha thanks so much guys! I just wanted to make sure I wasn't crazy and missing something. The girls will be walking in the grass around the venue anyways. And I can't see them getting that dirty in the grass anyway as long as its not wet/muddy. We do have a backup if it rains as well. I think it's more of a pain than it's worth.

I totally agree, can you talk to her about maybe laying flower petals along the sides of the aisle, or something else that isn't a runner?

My mom is insisting I have an aisle runner, too. We are getting married on a beach at the lake, we don't need an aisle runner as we'll have sand! I totally agree with your concerns, don't think you're nuts. Team no runner, here!

No runners! Definitely a hazard! And don't let anyone force anything on you... that's what has happened to me and now I just wish we eloped like I originally wanted to last year!

I think runners are just a safety hazard, were actually not even allowed to have it in the church because of safety.

My mom also pushed for an aisle runner for our church wedding and I said no. If you don't think it's a good idea and you don't think you'll like it, you're going to have to stand up for what you do/don't want or things can get out of control. Personally I agree with you about it being a hazard so I would not have one.

It's a deal. No runners for this lady. I'm just going to send this forum to my mom! Dude a runner on the sand? Sand would probably end up on top of the runner lol. Push for no on that as well! Smiley smile

    Thanks again guys!!

I would only use a runner on grass if it was something heavy like a persian carpet runner.

I would just assure mom that the venue will maintain the grass for the wedding and skip... I did a red carpet party for my daughter and it was so annoying fixing it after each girl..and that was on carpet so I can't imagine it being out doors

I think that unless u can buy a nice carpet than NO aisle runner. Neither burlap or cloth or paper. It's dangerous.
