My monster maid of honor

Lillian , on February 5, 2019 at 10:20 AM Posted in Family and Relationships 0 16
Okay, I asked my best friend/roommate to be my maid of honor because, well we lived together for so long and have been best friends since high school. Who else would I have chosen? She said yes with a huge smile on her face. Now I’m getting married in September of this year so the planning is totally taking off. Whenever I sent out group messages to the bridal party she is the only person who doesn’t respond. She also has told me many times she doesn’t feel involved in all the planning. So I went through the troubles of making her a personalized notebook with every little details that needs to be chosen so we can go through it together. After she received the notebook she still claimed to be feeling out of the loop and that she doesn’t feel like there’s anything that needs to be done as of now. Even though the list is huge. I understand it’s a big responsibility to be a maid of honor but she said yes and has wanted to be involved but she still seems to be throwing up road blocks for me and the rest of the wedding party. She says she wants to help but the communication is not there from her.
I am looking on some advice about maybe just having her be a bridesmaid and demoting her but I feel like it will turn into something so nasty! Help. I don’t expect anything from her i just want some communication and for her to not be such a pity party when I’m totally including her every-way I can

You just called your best friend a monster. Stop and think about that.

I wouldn't demote her. Next time she complains, just say "I am sorry you feel that way, but I tried to include you and did not receive any type of response." And just move on. The planning is really only supposed to be between you and FH anyways. Maybe you could let one of your other bridesmaids know how it is making you feel, and maybe one of them will step up and fill in on some of the things you are wanting your MOH to do. A friend of mine just got married and her MOH was very uninvolved, and one of her other bridesmaids helped her a lot (but didn't expect to be promoted to MOH or anything).

Thanks so much! That is really helpful, I don’t wanna be a crazy lady about the wedding so I’m trying to make it as peaceful as possible for everyone!

I mean, anyone who thinks gaslighting your best friend is okay is a monster.

I don’t think she’s gaslighting you at all. Her feelings are her feelings, and you don’t get to invalidate her feelings. Calling her a monster because she feels excluded is you gaslighting her, in my honest opinion.

In the sense of her telling me I have not tried to include her. And making me go back and actually think maybe I am being a dick and not including her as much as I should is by definition gaslighting.

Ive intentionally kept everyone out of the loop on my planning. When my MOH raised similar concerns I told her that I want her to be my honored guest and that I’ve got the planning. She said ok and has focused her efforts on the bachelorette and shower. I would stop trying to include her and tell her something similar. If she complains oh well. It’s not her wedding, she’ll get over it. I feel like you invite the drama when you try to cater to other people. Do your own thing, no need to demote her.

I agree with Rae. Maybe tell her to just focus on the bridal shower/bachelorette party and that you've got a good handle on the actual wedding planning! I think planning a bridal shower alone is a lot lol. Maybe once she starts planning it she will realize how much work it is.

I still don't understand how she can say she's out of the loop, or not included, when you send her the group text/message, and she's the one who doesn't respond! That's just crazy!!

Have you tried talking to her about what her expectations are? Maybe she wants to feel included in other ways and handing her a big to do list is making her feel overwhelmed. It might be that she wants to be more involved in some aspects where she's more comfortable and less involved in others. For example if she's creative, she could be envisioning helping you design and make DIY projects but might not want to organize and plan a party and wants to do things that are more in line with her skill set or comfort zone.

What you're describing is not gaslighting. But if you really think she's a monster who is gaslighting you, then you should go ahead and end the relationship. Her involvement in your wedding will naturally end as a result, obviously.

I had another thought. there is a lull sometimes if you have a longer engagement. Especially if you're super organized and get things done quickly. Then you have to wait because it's too early to do the next set of "planning" tasks. Maybe she didn't expect that kind of downtime.
Or maybe it's just not as fun as she thought it was going to be, when ultimately she doesn't get to make any decisions. She only gets to help you and FH make them. Idk. Am I over thinking this? Your story just stuck in my head for some reason.
I'm just thanking my lucky stars I don't have issues with my girls. Small tight group helps with that. Good luck.

I would like to give an update, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking and talking with people who have been in similar situations.
I recently received a message from her saying she is feeling like she wants to just be a guest at the wedding since she’s feeling some stress from her own personal life. Which I TOTALLY AND COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND. I do not want my wedding getting in the way of someone’s personal life, that’s crazy! So I replied and said if that’s what she thinks would be best then I am okay with that and I just wanted her to sit on it before she decided to fully let go of her position. She then came at me with “wow f*** you then, I don’t even want an invite. Count on me not being there at all.”
So here I am, I responded with some apologies and wanted to know why she felt that way and she stopped answering my phone calls and text messages. It’s been about a week since I’ve heard from her. I’ve come to the conclusion that whatever happens, happens. But with the wedding 6 months away it’s a little surprising having the maid of honor decide she’s not even coming at all. I guess I just need an outlet for all these feelings I’m having
thanks for listening to me vent
