My grandpa wants to marry us!!

J, on March 12, 2014 at 4:09 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 23

So today I was hanging out with my grandpa and my aunt and we were discussing the wedding a little bit. He is so excited about the wedding because I will be his first grandchild to get married and he LOVES my FH. Traditionally in my family we get married in the Catholic church. FH and I aren't doing that because it was very expensive. So he starts asking who is going to marry us and I am telling him that I am not sure yet when he suggests that he could marry us! He starts telling me that he is best qualified to marry us and then he could marry the rest of his grandchildren that don't married in the church and what not. He is not ordained but he wants to be able to.

My family is crazy but I do have to say that I love the idea!!! We are very close with my grandparents and he seems so excited!! What do you guys think??

My grandpa will not go to my wedding (too old), but if he was a part of it in that way, I would be over the moon excited.

I would totally take him up on that! We are still looking for someone to marry us (We too are not getting married in a church, even though everyone else in our family has).

I think that is a great idea! That's one thing FH and I wish we had, was someone we that we knew that we could choose to marry us. We aren't getting married in a church either, so it would be great to hvae someone we know perform the ceremony. At this point though, we are going to go with an officiant that we found that also did a co-worker's wedding.

I think that's fantastic! FH's BIL is marrying us. Smiley smile You need to call your county clerk's office and find out exactly what your grandpa needs to do in order to officiate. In CA, it's super simple to get a one-day license to officiate a wedding, but it's different for other states. Some accept the online ordination, some don't. Just go to your county website or give them a call to make sure it's legal! Good luck!

That is sweet that he offered!! I would like my grandpa to marry us, he means the world to me and we're close. FH really hasn't said yes or no, FMIL said no. That he can say something but not marry us, I'm not listening to her bc she's not paying for anything in our wedding. I'm going to add this to my watch list as I'd like to know as well.

How cool! I love the idea of being married by a family member. My FFIL is a pastor and my uncle is a priest and they are co-officiating our ceremony - something we will never forget!

I think it's awesome when someone you know and have a relationship with can marry you. That's a really special thing and a great memory to have. Do it!

I have no clue how to start the process of him getting ordained though...

That would be awesome! My grandpa died about 16 years or so ago but he would have given FH the marriage is 50/50 lecture and if you don't like the family get out while you can, LOL

Jacque - Check your state laws for who can marry you and what they have to do to be able to perform the actual ceremony. In some states you can get ordained online pretty easily, in others you can't

Jacque, my FFIL went online and was ordained. I think you can google search it and find out how to do it. In addition to being able to officiate a wedding, he can perform baptisms (which could be nice if/when you and FH have children) and funerals. He was able to book another wedding (before our wedding) for friends. As Kate said, I would check your state's laws but I know that in MA, anyone can be made a justice of the peace for one day so they can perform a ceremony but FFIL wanted to do more.
