My Fiance Does Not Want a Registry

Private User, on June 11, 2014 at 4:22 PM Posted in Planning 0 14

My fiance and I have been together for 5 years and have had our current house for almost 3. When he got engaged he said that the only thing he never wanted to do was a gift registry. He claims that a registry is impersonal and we already have what we need for the home. Some of my relatives have mentioned that they are looking forward to seeing our registry so that they will know what to get us. I love his thinking that our guests can get us something personal that they think we would appreciate, but I think that leads to issues with guests who don't know us (I have a HUGE family and I honestly don't see everyone often and not all have met the fiance) or guests that don't have the time to go out of their way for this kind of gift. I feel that that this means that we could end up with a lot of random home goods that we don't need.

However, I am all for an untraditional wedding registry. I have seen the registri

Wouldn't they just give you cash if they don't know what to get?

I have lived with my fh for 6 yrs and have a son we both decided to not have a registry. Most people might give you money. Your not asking for it but not knowing what to give you might get $.

Do a registry, tell him to stop being a pain in the ass (from a guests point of view), if someone wants to get you something more personal, they will.

You could register for items that need to be upgraded. Unless everything is still brand new you can always use an upgrade. Let him know if you get new stuff you could sell the old stuff at a garage sale. Or just do a small registry for items for activites that youlike to do. My Brother and SIL registered for camping gear cause they love to camp so much. Also how is the back yard, could it use a few things. People would rather get you what you wanted verses other options.

Do a small one with upgrades like new linens and bedding

a small registry will signify you aren't looking for a lot of gifts

If I were you I wouldn't do one. Your guests will survive and your FH will be happy.

I would still do a registry for your side since they are expecting it. A registry is much more convenient for guests rather than having to wander around for hours trying to think of what to buy you and what you need.

You may get money as well, but there are usually some guests who still want to give physical gifts. Also, if you're having a shower, a registry is important. People don't normally give money at showers.

My DH didn't want a registry. We have lived together for 4 years prior to wedding. I just saw it as a way to upgrade and replace some older things. Like you, I was asked numerous times about a registry so I did them on my own. And after the wedding who's feelings was hurt because I got everything that I wanted and he didn't get to pick anything. I didn't feel bad and I told him that it was his choice not to do it.

My fiance and I just did a small registry with a few things we wanted to upgrade, like towels and a bed set, and a few things we just thought were really cool (musical wine glasses, anyone?). That way, people can buy something from the registry if they want (and if they are quick), and they can get stuff for the wedding shower. And if there is nothing on there that they want to buy (your entire list will not be bought- people just don't buy some of the boring stuff), they will either pick something they want to give you, or they will take the hint and give you money.

Ask him if he is really opposed to a non-traditional registry. Brides Magazine (last month's issue) had a great article with suggestions on where to register that are out of the ordinary. Use that to get new equipment for a hobby you share (like camping), go on a great honeymoon, have awesome experiences back home, etc. Then maybe just register for a couple things on a traditional site (like new towels or something), just to appease the great-aunts that don't "get" this new registry thing... Good luck!

That's an awesome idea. I will have to find the article about the non-traditional registries. Thank you!
