My fiance can't wear a wedding band

Kenzie, on September 27, 2016 at 3:15 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 32

Hi, everyone!

My fiance was a college football player and suffered a terrible break of his left ring finger. After surgery and a rod inserted for several weeks following, he was left with a knuckle full of scar tissue. There is no way he will be able to wear a ring naturally - it will never fit over his knuckle. However, the lower part of his finger still looks normal.

We have considered a tattoo, but have never been able to find something we really like. I would like to use it as a last resort.

We have considered him wearing the ring on his right hand.

We have also considered trying to find a jeweler that could custom make a ring that opens and clasps shut around the base of his finger.

Has anyone ever faced a similar situation where your SO physically could not wear a ring? Does anyone have any other ideas that I am not thinking of?

Thanks in advance! Smiley smile

Could he wear a silicone ring?

Try a silicone ring! They stretch a little so it could go over his knuckle

We had thought about this too! I've never seen one in person, so I was unsure of just how flexible they are.

Have him wear it on the right hand

    or a silicone one.

My husband didn't wear his engagement ring at all- whatever- he's been wearing his wedding band much to my surprise- I think he's FINALLY starting to get used to it- but even if he didn't- no big deal. It doesn't make him less married.

Try emailing some of the silicone ring companies with the details you posted (and maybe a picture of his hand) and they may be able to tell you whether it would work! Most are fairly cheap too

My cousin's husband has the same issue, they just got married a few weeks ago. He is wearing his wedding band on his right hand. I honestly would not have even noticed it being on the "wrong" hand had someone not pointed it out. If he wants to wear a traditional wedding band rather than something silicone, I think that's a fine option!

    Another vote for silicone.

I'd advise against a tattoo as hand tats tend to blur and fade very quickly so he'll either need to keep doing upkeep on it or have it look like shit. Not worth it.

QALO rings may be the answer for you

My husband and I both have QALO for working out and other activities that we don't want to wear our nice rings. We love them and they are pretty flexible.

He can either wear it on his middle finger or his pinky finger or he can get a tattoo on the ring finger with your name on it

My FH can't wear a wedding band at work so I am leaving it up to him if he even wants to wear one at all. He mentioned getting a ring tattoo but it doesn't bother me either way.

Totally agree with the comment on the tattoo!

I am definitely going to look further into the silicone. Thanks, everyone!

I would look into silicone. Also I know someone who was born without a left hand so both she and her husband wear their rings on their right ring finger. I know left is traditional but I think it's cute they BOTH wear it on the right ring finger and it doesn't make them any less married!

I have a friend who's husband wanted a "wedding watch" instead of a wedding ring. I don't remember his reasoning, but I guess he was a big watch guy. People won't really see it and think "he's married," but it would be something that he could wear that he knows is from you and means something to him. You could inscribe the back.

I think wearing the band of his choice on his right ring finger makes the most sense. I periodically switch my engagement ring to my right hand to give my left ring finger a break. Even after a year, it still tickles to have a ring on my left ring finger, and sometimes I just need to put it on the other hand for 30 minutes. Everyone still knows it's my engagement ring.

My father wears a "Wedding watch" and not a wedding ring. I guess I never thought of it as abnormal until I got engaged and starting picking out rings for my FH. I asked him if he wanted to wear a ring -- he said yes -- because I'm used to my dad not wearing one. It wouldn't bother me if FH didn't want to wear one because of my experience. But I can see how it is not the norm! Anyway, it's an option if he can't wear a ring! My dad LOVES his watch...means a lot to him. He almost lost it on a recent family vacation and I thought he was going to cry (he doesn't cry). But we found it! Anyway...good luck! Smiley smile

My jeweler has a little ad in the shop that they can make any ring into one that opens up- I'm sure that you could talk to a jeweler about doing that with a ring he likes if he would rather have a metal one. If he doesn't mind silicone, those seem really cool!

Does he want to wear a ring that badly. My father never wears his wedding band. It's actually weird to me that FH wants to wear his. My dad works in an industry where you can't have anything on your hands because you can lose a finger that way.

I know someone who wears his band on his right hand due to injury. It's no biggie if he wears it on the other hand!
