MY fail. Teeth whitening.

FuturemrsDickinson, on June 21, 2015 at 11:22 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 17

The post the other day had me in a frenzy to find something other than crest white strips, because they make my teeth uber sensitive. I rush ordered some activated charcoal powder off amazon & it arrived yesterday. I was so pumped! Then I looked at the package and it states "Warning; In the state of California this product has been known to cause cancer and reproductive problems". WHAT? Why wasn't that listed on amazon? That shit is going back! Then I remembered the ever so popular Pinterest pin of hydrogen peroxide, water, baking soda & toothpaste. So I did that. I BURNED MY DAMN GUMS! I only brushed for about 40 seconds and not the full 2 min. After my 10 minute meltdown & 3 ice cubes later, I re-brushed with just toothpaste & my gums look normal again. I swear to God, yesterday was eventful. Wine never tasted so good last night. Any other ideas? Any of you ladies have DIY fails? The photo is b&w but you can see the light areas were burned. Don't mind my snapchat pic lol

That's so weird! I did the hydrogen peroxide mix every day for two weeks and no burn! You must be really sensitive!

Yikes... It sounds like you have a really sensitive mouth.

I just sprinkle some baking soda on my toothpaste and brush my teeth.. Seems to work fine.

I've never heard of activated charcoal for tooth whitening. Peroxide shouldn't burn though. Holy crow.

California's laws are really strict on what needs to be advised. For example, I use a toner on my face sold by a very popular brand at Sephora that has that warning for California. I've never stopped using it.

FMM, I'm going to try baking soda! I just pitched my white strips for sensitivity.

Try the charcoal before you send it back. I know tons of people, including myself, who use it for teeth and face and they have never had a problem. My dentist recommends it for people. If you've ever heard of supermud.. it is mostly charcoal and it originated in California lol

Maybe I will try the charcoal. Ugh, my gums for sure need a break though. I just used only baking soda and my gums are so sore! I had no idea California was so strict about things.

Everything is known to the state of California to cause cancer and/or reproductive issues. There is a sign in nearly every store that says "Products sold here have been known to the state of California to cause cancer." Totally terrified me when I first moved to LA. Almost became a hermit. Decided that if everything is going to give me cancer according to the state of California, then I'm damned either way. I have since come to the conclusion that the state of California is a hypochondriac Smiley smile

The warning is because of Proposition65. There are a list of chemicals that are known to potentially cause cancer. And no matter WHAT amount is in a product that label has to be slapped on if there is any trace amount. Most of those chemicals require a large amount though to actually cause an issue (I work in health, environmental and safety here in California. I have to know this law for my job and place some of those signs).

That stupid California warning is on everything - it is even on the brand of jelly/jam I buy because it has a "home canned" style lid. It is BS. That being said - if your gums are that sensitive you should probably just call your dentist. I use Crest Advanced White Strips once a year for 2 weeks and my teeth are super white. They do make my teeth feel sensitive and weird but I also have to use Sensodyne toothpaste. It helps tremendously.

Has anyone tried the glo system from sephora? I need to do something but worry about what all you ladies are reporting with the sensitivity.

I wouldn't do anything for the next week or two... If you burned your mouth everything is going to hurt for a while.

I also have very sensitive teeth/gums, and my dentist recommended ACT mouthwash. It really cuts down on the sensitivity. Using it daily allows me to also use white strips or my whitening trays.

I used This without the mouth wash and it's cheaper than crest strip. It has a tray that you put into hot water and insert on you mouth and mold to your teeth. And if that gel is too strong used 5 min whiting at Walmart. I promised you it works but I been using it for 3 mos and I look like I had my teeth professionally Whiting

I've been using that Colgate whitening pen that comes with the toothbrush and already see a big difference!

I used to brush my teeth with salt. Sounds weird but it worked. And I have sensitive teeth/gums. But I used to take the salt shaker in the bathroom, put some on my brush and brush away. Then follow it with regular toothpaste because salt is gross lol. My uncle asked me once if I had gotten my teeth whitened.
