My engagement ring keeps breaking. Should I get a new one?

Christina, on June 20, 2016 at 2:35 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

Hi all, my ring is non-traditional — a designer ring, not meant to be an engagement ring that my fiance had reset in white gold after a few stones came loose. The new metal helps, but the design itself is dainty and sort of jagged, and does get snagged on things. I'm also sort of hard on my hands.

Most recently, the center stone chipped. It's an aquamarine (less strong than a diamond). The jeweler offered to look for a sapphire in a similar color, but it will be difficult, as the color and cut are very unique.

I love my ring but am disheartened; we've been engaged little more than a year and have had all this trouble. I've considered getting a band and only wearing my real ring on special occasions. But I'd been planning to get a custom band to match this ring (standard bands don't work with it), and don't know if it's worth it for a ring I can rarely wear.

I don't want a new ring, but I do want a ring I can actually wear. Advice?

What would you prefer---getting a new ring every five years, or having one that will last you for the next 25? I'll be honest...I might go with the first option, myself Smiley smile

I think if you want to rock a fragile gemstone ring then do it, but with the knowledge that you may need to replace it or have it fixed every 3-5 years (hopefully not every single year!). If you want something that will last you a lifetime, then you'll need to get a setting that will protect your gemstone (raised prongs really help my morganite).

Also, how can you post this without a picture? I want to seeeeeeeee it lol.

Get a diamond or another very sturdy stone. Sorry but from the sounds of it in the next 5 years all of your ring is going to need to be replaced. I have a ring that I have worn almost everyday for the past 6 years and it has never needed work. The stone is Blue topaz. I would also consider going to a different jeweler and getting another opinion. You should get the stones tested and appraised. Jeweler's can be a lot like car sales men.

On that note I am planning on only wearing mine for special occasions. It really depends on how much disposable income you plan on having to get it fixed as often as it sound like you will need it.

    Picture!!

You should talk to a few jewelers and see if there's anything you can do to add protection to your ring.

What are you doing to it......? Honestly, get a stronger stone or buy a plain band to wear and then put your engagement ring on a chain and wear it as a necklace.

If you are hard on your ring(s) consider having a cheaper band that you can wear during those activities or investing in a sturdier metal/gemstone.

Thanks for the responses. To answer your questions, I'm not doing anything too out of the ordinary. I live in NYC and do travel often so my hands incur much more activity than many by sheer lifestyle (lugging groceries for blocks/up flights of stairs, lifting luggage).

However, I should note (I ran out of space in my post) that when I first got the ring, it was silver -- highly malleable -- which is why the stones were coming out. When we went to the jeweler, he reset it in white gold (much stronger) and reinforced the prongs. You can sort of see in the photo (though it's poor quality, apologies) that the setting is designed to be minimalist, so the stones show more.

I had slammed my hand a few times leading up to the chip. The chip occurred on the outer point of the center stone, which isn't really protected by a prong (not sure you can see here). The jeweler is currently just buffing it out so it will have less of a point.

I'm not sure if it's worth trying to address this issue. I can also have the prongs enlarged but it will change the look of the ring (the stones are tiny). But even though maybe some of the issues were sort of corrected, I'm not sure whether I should still be wary and try for a new ring altogether.

Oh also, to the woman with Blue Topaz: what is your setting like? Perhaps that could be a decent replacement.

Don't have any advice, just wanted to chime in you're not alone. I've been having a similar issue with my rhodium dipped black ring. I adore it. But I am not a girly girl/dainty/graceful in the least and wearing it every day is wearing the coating right off. I don't want to have to send it back to the designer for re-coating every 3 months but I don't want to get rid of it either..

I feel like your ring should not be breaking that much, no matter if it's not a diamond or not!! That seems like poor craftsmanship to me. If it were me, I would buy another ring to wear and cherish the one that your FH proposed with and only wear it on special occasions. I would not want it to be ruined or need to replace it every so many years.

Also, please change your avatar to something other than the rings! (the avatar is not the same as the background pic on the app). The generic rings are associated with spam/trolls, so this will help you get more responses to your posts and it also makes the threads easier to read. Its a solitaire setting square-ish cut (I dont have pictures with me). But i know they cut topaz in alot of shapes and sizes so it might be a good idea to look into it. It a very sturdy stone.
