My engagement ring is getting discoloration from my work.

Erin, on November 6, 2018 at 7:09 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 13

Hi I work as a dog groomer and my hands are my job. My shampoo at my work has vinegar in it and i've noticed my ring were it get the most contact with the shampoo is getting discolored. I still want to wear a ring at work but I'm thinking my engagement ring isn't the best thing to wear i had a puppy bite it the other day. Do you know of any good brands of the silicone rings for the working hands?

I've heard of Qualo rings but couldn't tell you anything about them. I am wondering what metal your ring is made from. White gold has a rhodium finish that wears away. Many people find that they need to have their rings redipped as frequently as every six months to maintain the look they want. If your ring isn't white gold, I'd question the jeweler about it.

We bought some silicone rings on amazon. They come in every color imaginable for pretty cheap prices. Many of them come in sets. For example the set I bought includes 7 colors. I think FH’s set had 5 colors. I don’t think we paid more than $15. As far as your real ring, talk to your jeweler. My FH had our store dip his ring so it would be white gold instead of yellow. They told us we can bring it in to be dipped as much as we need. Our jeweler said it varies from one piece of jewelry to another. Some people go in every 6 months to a year to get re-dipped while other people only need to go every couple of years. Our jeweler was very helpful!

Same! We got a pack of 5 for like $12. We wear them when we go hiking and to waterparks and all that fun stuff. No particular name brand and they work just as well. We even stack them together sometimes Smiley smile

I would try to avoid getting a ring redipped too often honestly.

    Here's a snipit about it

How often should I have my ring dipped?

To start, all white gold rings should have been plated, or dipped, before they are considered a true white gold piece. Over time the rhodium plating begins to wear off of the rings underlying metal. On average, the plating on a white gold ring should last about a year, depending on how often the ring is worn.

Once you begin to see your ring fade in brightness, or spots of a yellowish-gold peek through the rhodium plating, it’s safe to stay it’s time for your ring to re-dipped.

Since this should not happen within a year’s time, having your ring re-plated every year could actually cause more harm than good. In order to re-plate your ring, any scratches must be buffed out and all old plating stripped clean.

White gold wears differently on everyone. This can be caused by medicines you take, lotions, how active you are, etc.”
