My dry skin needs HELP

Stephanie , on August 31, 2017 at 1:47 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 20

Ok so this past summer my skin has broken out like it NEVER has before! I literally have never seen my face like this... never had many problems in teenage years or anything. But after a few months I went to the dermatologist. She prescribed me some medications (I'll tell you if you want, maybe someone else took these) and sent me on my way. So far, no luck but she did say it would take 8-12 weeks for the medication to make a noticeable difference and it may get worse before it gets better... However! I now have acne AND the most sensitive and driest skin I've ever had... I've never really had dry skin for more than like a 24-36 hour period! I don't know how to go about my day without looking like a shedding snake. Because I'm in school out of state I won't be able to go back to see her till thanksgiving. So here's where you guys come in... anyone out there with dry skin tips?? Especially when it comes to makeup? Every little bit helps, thanks ya'll!

I would try coconut oil, moisturizing face masks, and try to exfoliate the dry skin. It sounds weird but try using a tooth brush (soft bristle) or some type of face cleansing brush get the dry skin off

May I ask what type of medication she prescribed you with? I was prescribed a medication that made me felt super dry all the time that I would religiously put on lotion, lip balm, and chug water so I wonder if it's the same?

But I would just recommend using cream moisturizers and staying hydrated. Perhaps using exfoliating masks can get rid of the dry flaky skin. Or use makeup that doesn't enhance the dryness

Try drinking lots of water. If I have any dry patches on my face, at night i either use Aquaphor or Vaseline. Good luck!

I'd recommend oil cleansing. I had oilly sking but developed a dry patch on my right eyelid that no moisturizer would help. I also had always had dry patches on my nose and in the winter a patch or two on my cheek. Since I swirched to oil cleansing, my face is no longer oilly and my dry patches are totally gone. Just research oil cleansing and make your own mix a little at a time to test the right blend for you. I use 1 part castor oil to 1 part avocado to 1 part sweet almond oil. You might break outthe first week or 2 and then your skin will adjust

If you were prescribed Retin-A, which is common for "adult" acne, some people have this type of reaction. When she prescribed it to me, my dermatologist asked me to also use Cetaphil Oil Control daily facial moisturizer. It is not cheap, but it really does the job. It also has SPF 30. I would also echo other recommendations for exfoliating a bit more often.

I went through the same thing. Each person is different, but here's what worked for me:

    1. Clean diet, especially cutting down on cheese and sugar (i used to have a lot of those). Drinking more water.

    2. Cleaning my face with neutrogena acne face wash at night and micellar water in the morning. This routine really helped me maintain the right balance of cleanliness without stripping oil from my face.

    3. Believe it or not, my skin is so dry that the only moisturizer that suits me is Ponds Cold Cream. I use it twice a day and my skin drinks it up. But you could try using moisturizers from cerave and cetaphil as well. They are not as rich but definitely work.

    4. The game changer for me was this Exfoliater called Cure Aqua Gel. I think it is Japanese or Korean, sorry, don't remember. If you buy it from Amazon it comes with instructions in English. You use it on clean, dry skin (not wet skin) and it removes all dead skin. It doesn't tingle or anything.

    5. I have a lot or hair on my face and for a while I used Sally Hensen cream hair remover, but for the last year I have been going to EWC and for some weird reason my skin has become softer and more even-toned. I am not sure if this has anything to do with your question but I thought i would mention.

    6. Once a week I give myself a facial- a paste of Bentonite clay, honey and lemon juice (just a few drops). It really cleans up my pores, moisturizes it and has reduced acne spots. It took me a long time to figure out that this particular combo works for me, if you do try it, go easy just to make sure your skin doesn't react.

    Good luck!

If it's accutane you're taking...pound that water!!! I took low dose accutane for a year. Products didn't help too much with the dryness so the best thing was to hydrate really well. If you feel joint pain too...more water helps.

Hydrating face masks may help temporarily. I use some SK II masks that really moisturizer the skin. I usually use it before I put on makeup because it really takes care of all the dryness and flakiness if there's any.

It does get worse before it gets better...and when it got better it was amazing. I'm sure you'll see improvement by the time thanksgiving comes around.

Warning though, if this is what you're taking, you might be dealing with dry skin forever. I had the oiliest skin before taking it and it's been 5 years since, still dry skin problems. But at least no acne.

Thanks so much guys! @T I was prescribed Tretinoin .05% cream and Spironolactone to take at night, and Doxy-cycline mono to take in the morning and at night. I LOVE face masks, but was told specifically not to use them till we see how I react. And honestly, my skin has become so sensitive that I'm kind of afraid to.

My dermatologist told me to use cetaphil cleanser just to gently wash my face at night, but even that was too much. it BURNED!! So I switched to a Neutrogena Natural cleanser and it seems to be working pretty well. I use micellar water to remove my eye makeup and I have a exfoliator that I love from Bosia, but now its just not really doing anything. I use a coconut oil based moisturizer (straight coconut oil clogged my pores in the past, idk what it'd do now) but i've been debating whether or not to buy garnier or l'oreal or something.

I generally drink a lot of water anyways, but I can always up my intake! But for a more immediate quick fix, can anyone give me tips on doing makeup with dry skin? I'm willing to wait the 8-12 weeks to see if this actually does anything, but until then... I used to put on moisturizing sunscreen, then foundation and my foundation would stay all day (I've been using maybelline fit me matte & poreless forever). Now my foundation either just wipes right off, becomes splotchy/cakey (like its all gathered in one area) or highlights my flaky skin. Smiley sad Smiley sad Smiley sad

I purchased the maybelline fit me dry skin version of the same foundation, not super impressed. I bought Burt's Bees BB cream, still not great.,,,

I feel your pain! my skin is mostly under control now because i take a birth control pill with tetracycline in it, but for years i had the worst acne. when i was trying ProActiv to clear it up and my skin got really dry, i started using grapeseed oil as a moisturizer. it's a lighter oil (lighter than coconut oil which i have also found clogs my pores) and mildly astringent so it might even help your acne a bit. i still use it now.

I was prescribed Claravis (another name for Accutane) for several months and Tretinoin for my face. I was so miserable the first few months (especially when it got really bad), but the result I received afterwards was so worth it. I wonder if a primer could help with keeping your makeup on? If I were you I would even go to a Sephora or Ulta and see if they're willing to give you free samples of different foundations to see what would work best with your skin during this time.

Regarding make up for dry skin, Covergirl has a primer which is light and prevents my skin from flaking. This is what I will be wearing for the wedding.

I use Neutrogena hydroboost as my foundation. It is more of a daily wear thing, and I honestly don't know whether it is a real foundation or CC cream (I don't know much about makeup). But this provides good coverage, is light on the skin and lasts long, especially when used with a primer.

I am struggling to find a concealer that likes me. Tarte and Nyx have been the most long-lasting so far without a graying effect, but you can still tell I have dark circles.

Here's a pic of me with all these products, I'd say about six hours after application:

I also use Tretinoin and take Spironolactone. The Tretinoin is a retinoid and definitely dries out my skin. I use Aveda's Wedding Masque moisturizer at night. I've never used anything that has worked so well on my skin. I recommend it to everyone I know and they all love it. It's not cheap ($65), but my dry skin is gone and looks and feels better than ever before.

I started working PT at a derm office because I was in such desperate need of face help! I had horrible cystic acne (that started in my mid-20s) and dry skin (the girls i work with said it was like drying out onion skin :-\ ). What worked for me - cutting back on the topical acne medications to every 3-4 days and using a good moisturizer - day and night! I used a multitude of different lotions before I found what worked for me: Elta MD tinted SPF moisturizer in the morning and simple cerave at night. I also had VI peels done to help get rid of old acne scar damage. My skin is like babies skin now and I don't even have to wear makeup anymore!!

    Good luck!

I recommend a good cleansing oil to clean with at night, such as Eclos. It helps balance the oils and can make you both less oily and less dry at the same time. I have small eczema patches on my face, and my daughter has horrible acne and we are both able to use it. You can find it usually at Target or Ulta, and sometimes RiteAid.

So I am taking the one right before tretinoin. Maybe retin-A, not sure. But I also take spironolactone twice a day and it almost took 2 months for it to work.

I use senegence products (they make lipsence). It's really expensive but they are definitely the best products I've used.

The "climate control" is amazing, especially for dry skin. I also really like the color correcting tinted moisturizer. It made me break out a lot initially because it increases cell renewal and purges the impurities (similar to how retin-a does). I stuck with it and my skin has really cleared up.

Good luck to you! Let us know how it goes.

Hello. I also have dry skin, especially in winter, hands and face are made unbearably dry. I use cosmetics from AnneMarie Borling, I buy a mask, eye cream and face cream. The lotion for washing takes each time the other, but I try to buy as natural as possible. I also use a facial massager (for better absorption of the cream), a washing machine, and a dermaroller 0.5 mm (once a week + collagen), a roller massager (for stimulation of the blood circulation), virtually, all of their devices have chosen here https://skincarehabits.com/, but also read a lot feedback on forums (if you are interested in what kind of devices I use - please write me, I will gladly tell).

All this gives a great result if you use it regularly

I do all the procedures at home because it is cheaper but no less effective

My next step is to buy a scrubber for the face.

My tip is definitely using Albolene for cleansing your skin! I got dry skin and trust me, I tried everything until I figured out that what was drying my skin was the harsh chemicals of the regular skin cleanser I was using every day, twice a day! So Albolene really does help me because it dissolves the makeup in a way that isn't harsh on your skin! https://www.albolene.com/albolene-through-the-ages/
