My Dress

Disclaimer: This is a long post.
My step mom agreed to make my dress back in March. She’s a really good seamstress and she’s made all my sisters/nieces prom dresses. The last time we spoke (in April) I’d told her if there was anything she needed from me let me know, she even asked me about a specific pattern I wanted on the dress. She also told me she’d be going to the fabric store to get what she needed.
Well, last week I’d checked in with her to see how everything was going & her response was ‘so are we doing the dress’ 🥴 I’m not sure where she got the impression that we wasn’t. I called her and she’d told me how she just lost a close cousin, she’s grieving so on & so forth. I explained to her that I’d rather her not to do the dress bc I understand she’s going through a lot plus with my wedding being the end of July, as time is of the essence.Long story short, she hasn’t started on the dress and she said she’d still be okay with doing it for me. I live in Texas and she lives in Illinois. I asked her how long would the process take, especially since she hasn’t gotten the fabric. She told me I could come to Illinois the end of June to try the dress on. However, I don’t think 2 weeks is enough time for her to make the dress. Especially with the dress I want her to make. She said when she gets in her mode she can sew a frequently to get it done. I want to call her today and see if the fabric has come in or if she has it. If not, at this point I’d rather take a loss with the money I’ve given her and try to find another dress. Is it too late to get a dress? Like, if I were to go to DB today and find a dress would the alterations take longer than 5 weeks? I’m not sure what to do.

Alterations don't take 5 weeks. It's a matter of the seamstress' availability and schedule. I've tried on dresses at DB that fit fine, just needed a hem. For my dress, I changed the zipper to a corset (gained too much weight), hemmed the front, and put in a bustle. I think it was done in a week or 2. If you buy a sample, they'll spot clean it for free

So sorry about what you're going through, and best of luck

Oh perfect! Thank you so much for your feedback. Here is a dress I tried on when I did go, I liked it a lot. But this was back in February. I’ll have to see if they still have it. I think the only thing that needed to be altered was the top bc she used clips to pull it in. Does this look okay? Like the bottom and everything. My Dress 1

Oh man this is stressful, so sorry to hear about your step-mom's loss. Grief is hard and can completely surprise you sometimes. You look absolutely stunning in the David's Bridal dress I d definitely call and see if its still in stock or if something similar is. If not try some department stores Nordstroms, Macy's, Dillards, Bloomingdales, Lulus also has a fun wedding section. Good luck and remember it will all work out just a little plot twist!

Hey Imani - First if all, I am so sorry to hear about this situation. I can imagine it is extremely stressful, especially with so much still unknown. Second of all, the DB dress look FANTASTIC on you!! You have a great figure - I bet you can find a dress with very little alterations to be done in 5 weeks! I am a planner, so if I were you, I would probably go to DB (or another store) just to see what kind of options you have regardless of what happens with your stepmom. So sorry to hear about her loss. Sounds like she is dealing with a lot right now.

Oh man, sounds stressful. If I were in your shoes, I would go to bridal salons immediately and buy something off the rack. Given your time frame, you will want a dress that you can take home on the spot, nothing that has to be shipped. I don't know how David's Bridal works of if they have off the rack dresses because I have never been there. As long as you buy an off the rack dress ASAP, then a seamstress should definitely be able to do all of the alterations in time.

Thank you Hanna! My friend and I will go tomorrow after church. She said if we have to use the whole day to find a dress we will. So I am truly grateful for that.

Those are stunning!! I love an intricate back design!! I love them both, but I think I gravitate more towards the first one, but you never know how they will fit or feel. One thing to think about with online purchases is the delivery time, in addition to any alterations. I feel like the mail has been very inconsistent!

Oh of course! This place is about 25 from me, I would go in person to try on. But I think these are way out of my price range lol

Good luck! While I didn't end up buying off the rack myself, some of the dresses I looked at off the rack were stunning and actually much better deals price-wise. I hope you find something you love!

I went to a bridal boutique by me and got to take this beauty home the same day because it was an off the rack dress… I wasn’t in a time crunch or anything but this dress happened to fit me like a GLOVE and it was in PERFECT condition and instead of it being almost 2,000 dollars (that’s how much it would have been if I had ordered it brand new) it was 1,200! My suggestion would definitely be a boutique around you

Hi Imani. I'm so sorry to hear of your dress stress. I think you should also shop non-bridal department stores? Are you looking for a ball gown or now mermaid? Lace? Intricate back? White/ ivory or other color? Price range? Maybe we can send you some ideas? Saks, Offthe5th, Nordstrom, Nordstrom Rack, Neiman Marcus, Bergdorff, Tadashi Soji, Bhldn, Lulu's, Shein. You can also get a sheath and add an overskirt for 2 dress options. I saw some organza overskirts tied with a belt on Amazon.

Thanks a lot Michelle. I’m really looking for a ball gown because I want to feel like a princess.

Here are a few inspiration pictures. I did try a few places you listed but not all. I’ll look into those today. My friend is taking me to a local shop today as well. My Dress 9
