My Custom Dress and Veil: From Start to Finish

earias, on December 6, 2017 at 9:45 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 37

I'm so excited to share my dress and veil I had custom made and the process behind it for those contemplating doing the same. I found my dressmaker on Yelp and met with her back in January. We went over my Pinterest board and my vision. I wanted something very elegant and flowy with lots of movement and beautiful high quality fabric. I wanted lace and 3/4 sleeves. She sketched a design, measured me and then recommended I go to San Francisco to a well known fabric store for the best selection and variety of fabric. Instead of the usual dress shopping, my BMs and I made a day trip in May to S.F. and had fun exploring this 4 story fabric store, picking out the silk chiffon, imported lace, beaded applique, veil and lace for the veil. Then I officially began the process of having the dress made in October. The dressmaker started with the lining to get the overall fit and shape. I went twice for that part. The third time she had added the skirt and we worked on adding the lace bodice.....

.....and sleeves. The fourth time I went back the dress needed to be adjusted at the waist and the applique still needed to be added. Today was my fifth and final fitting! The veil was designed to complement the simplicity of the skirt by adding matching lace around the edge so that it flowed beautifully behind the dress. I love how they look together. I spent about $800 for the fabric and materials and about $1600 for the labor. With the high quality silk and lace, this dress would easily be over $3000 retail. But for me, it was more about designing the dress exactly how I envisioned it and being part of the process. It is even more special too because my BMs got to help pick out the fabric and provide their feedback on design elements. I recommend this process to anyone on the fence about it. Now, without further ado, here are pictures from start to finish.

3rd fitting, the skirt has been added and now we're adding the lace bodice and sleeves. I should add I really wanted to wear a normal bra because I hate how I feel in strapless bras. They just don't support my 38DD girls. She created straps so I could do that but still made it pretty, showcasing the lace neckline.

And last but not least: my veil! This is probably my favorite. The way the simple skirt works with the intricate lace veil is exactly what I had in mind. I'm already imagining walking down the aisle with them flowing behind me!
