My Cousin Photographer Took Weird Pictures and I'm Upset

Gwen, on July 24, 2019 at 8:29 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12
Hey guys, so my wedding was last week and my little cousin was the photographer. He is 17 and has mild autism and schizophrenia but is usually a really sweet kid. He's really interested in photography so I said he could take our wedding photos and he was excited. Well, we just got all the pictures back and there were some concerning ones. First of all, there were about forty pictures of female guests feet, including mine. They weren't just in the pictures either. He literally zoomed in on our feet specifically. He also took a picture of his private parts and a toilet with waste in it and somehow snuck into my changing room to get a picture of me in my underwear. Some of the pictures were ok of course but the majority are weird or inappropriate and I feel so violated. I really wasn't expecting him to act like this now I don't know what to tell his parents. Please help.

I think that this is way beyond the advice that you’re going to get in a wedding planning forum and should be handled privately with your family and some serious counseling.

I know. I'm super embarrassed right now and don't know how to bring it up to them. 😩

I’m a mental health specialist and also finishing up my Master of social work in May.
I definitely recommend you speaking to his parents since he is a minor. Also, I hope those weren’t the only pictures you had from your wedding.
Sorry you experienced this. I’m sure that he is getting the proper care if he has those diagnoses. However, this is definitely something that needs to be brought to the attention of his parents.

Yikes....I think you're just gonna have to buck up and tell them you need to discuss the photos.

I feel like that is super concerning, and you definitely need to bring it up to the parents. I might invite them (the parents) over to your house and ask them if they have seen all of the photos from the wedding, and then let the photos speak for themselves.

Think about it this way - you're doing this out of concern for his well being! He could be closer to getting the help he deserves by you talking about this

Don't be nervous just state the facts in a calm mature way. "I just wanted to speak with you because I am concerned over some of the pictures xyz took and I wanted you to be aware." Just offer your support in whatever way you can and don't talk about it with other family members or friends.

Like PP said, I would ask if they’ve seen all the photos and have them come over and look at them. The photos will speak for themselves. This way there’s no chance of them taking it the wrong way. Or even just say something like “he took some really great shots, but others are a bit concerning, have you by chance seen all the photos?”

I would start out by saying that you need to talk to them about something and it's something that makes you uncomfortable but you really need to make them aware of it. Then just show them the pictures. Let it go from there. Good luck

Remember you're doing the right thing by telling his parents. He clearly needs more help and telling his parents while he's still a minor will be the best thing. I'm sorry your pictures are not appropriate, that really sucks. It was nice of you to let him try.
