My Bridesmaids/maid of Honor

Carrie, on October 22, 2019 at 12:32 PM Posted in Planning 0 10

This might be long.... sorry

I asked my best friend of 8 years to be my maid of honor, she accepted gladly but at the same time wasnt thrilled to have been asked. I also have a "sister" who is my matron of honor, I have known her for like 18 years. I feel like my MOH does not want to do it, she doesnt talk in our group text, I know she has a 1 yr old infant but she just doesnt seem to be putting her input into things. Should I ask her again if she wants to do this or should I just hold off until things really need to start moving along.

A couple weeks ago I asked my girls if they would like to go to a bridal expo and they all responded and she didnt. I thought she had, and I asked her last night if she was coming and she said No, whats up. I then asked about going to the bridal expo and got: Never said I was, I dont go out on sundays. I said Oh ok. Then she was like your making me feel bad like I did something wrong. I had responded with No its ok, I thought you were coming for some reason (I have an extra ticket and I couldnt figure out why). Instead of her saying its ok or something like that she just said NOPE! Like wth???

I really feel like she doesnt want to do this, and I dont know how to approach her with out feeling like a jerk. HELP please

If I were you, I wouldn't worry about it too much. As you said, she has a one-year-old, so her plate is really full. Sunday could be the only time she can relax with her child. I honestly would never expect one of my friends to go to a bridal expo with me. It's just walking around and talking to a bunch of vendors. That's not really enjoyable for someone who isn't getting married. Some friends are really interested in wedding planning, some just aren't. That's okay, it doesn't make them a bad friend. All she needs to do is get the dress you ask her to and show up for the wedding. I wanted try to get her involved in the actual planning of your wedding. That's up to you and your fiance, not your bridal party. I think if you keep involving her in the planning process, you will continue to be disappointed. I would hold off talking to her about anything wedding related, until you need to have her buy a dress.

It sounds like she might just be busy with other things. You mentioned that she has a 1 year old. Although I don't have any yet, children especially young ones are a lot work. She is probably happy that you asked, but my guess is she has other stuff going on as well. I wouldn't take it personally. Your wedding is over a year from now so it probably isn't her number 1 priority which if we are being honest it is really is only your and your fiance's priority. Everyone else is there to support you, but they have other stuff going on in their lives too. All your friend needs to do is buy the dress you want her to wear and be there for the wedding otherwise everything else is just optional. It is nice your other bridesmaids can go with you, but it isn't a requirement.

What do you mean she “wasn’t thrilled” to be asked? Did she say that or is that your perception of her reaction? I don’t think her saying she doesn’t want to attend a wedding expo on a day that’s inconvenient for her means that she doesn’t want to be a part of your wedding. She’s busy caring for her toddler and your wedding is still a year away.

Cause when I asked her she didnt seem like she wanted to be in the wedding to begin with, thats why I say she wasnt thrilled. She also NEVER said that she wasnt going to attend the bridal expo, I also didnt know that she wasnt available on sundays. She recently broke her phone so getting in contact with her has NOT been easy, and doing things thru social media since thats the only way to contact her has been difficult. I would NEVER inconvenience anyone!! I am NOT that person. She is usually very tell it like it is person and she has a tendency to go MIA. With that being said, I dont want her to feel like she HAS to be the MOH, if she doesnt want to then she doesnt have to, point blank.

If she's got a lot on her plate, I can see why she isn't thrilled about being involved with wedding things. She might think that you'll expect a lot from her when she already has her own life to worry about. Your wedding is a year away and aside from figuring out when you'll be going dress shopping, there really doesn't need to be a group chat for her to "input" on. I've seen it on here a lot, no one cares about your wedding as much as you do. Just remember that everyone has lives outside of your wedding and that the bridal party isn't responsible for planning your wedding and make sure you're being a friend before a bride. Wedding talk gets old real fast for someone who doesn't want to talk about weddings.

Its not super convenient, but you've got time. Give her some space and then circle back with her about MOH stuff maybe after the holidays (if you can wait that long before major bridal party planning). Also just be transparent with her, acknowledge that she's got a lot going on and talk through what you would like from her as a friend and as a MOH.

She’s been your friend for a really long time and it’s an important friendship for you, In cases like this I like to say how I feel and also know what’s the other person is feeling (maybe she’s busy, too tired, etc) it’s better to be honest and talk it out when you’re feeling it that let the feelings grow. That’s just my opinion l, specially considering the type of friendship

Okay, I had people VOLUNTEER to be in my Wedding and they were supposed to go with me to the Bridal Expo. Two of them were also getting Married.

Fast forward to the day of, the other 2 👰s didn’t show, 1 MoH couldn’t leave from Homecoming at our college to attend. 1 Bridesmaid didn’t want to pay 💲8️⃣⏺0️⃣0️⃣ to attend the event, but wanted to go out to eat afterwards.

So, there I am day of with one person that care with me out of 6 that I had asked. I’m crying during the Fashion Show because all these girls are there with their Moms. I didn’t have that option. One girl even brought her Granny in a Wheel Chair. I lost it again when I saw her. And again out in the car.

I do think that your friend is a bit busy with the Baby and life and needs to let you know that maybe she needs to either Hostess or come as a guest.

However, she is in the wrong for not responding. I had one re-placement Bridesmaid that wouldn’t respond to the group messages.

I have a total of 5 including her, I asked who wanted to come she NEVER even gave a response the others did. One girl (my future sister in law) messaged me last night and said she wasnt able to come cause she forgot she had something else, which is fine with me. My mom isnt here an either is my grandma, so having my girls there means something to me. For her to not really even respond and when I asked she seemed cold, I get it she has a toddler who is like my niece her mother is like my sister, SO for her to be acting like this is NOT her. Im going to give her some time. Im hoping by Jan when we need to start at least looking at dresses she will at least say something instead of just reading the messages and not responding.
