We just told our DJ to play whatever ambient music they usually play. Part of the reason of hiring a professional DJ is that they know what is appropriate for different points in the wedding (dinner time vs dancing, etc). So unless you have a specific request, you can just leave it up to their discretion.

Your DJ should be able to play soft background music. As a professional, your DJ should be know what type of music is appropriate for cocktail hour.

We are NOT having music playing for the cocktail hour, per our DJ suggestion! He will then add that extra hour of playing time on to our reception. 😃.
