Music

So my FH is Mexican-American, and traditionally they like to have “bands” at their wedding. This would be Mexican music, of course. The dilemma I’m having is that’s I do not speak Spanish and (at least) half of my family doesn’t either. This band would cost a hefty price (which his father has already said he would pay) but I’m really not feeling the idea of having music that I don’t know and can’t understand. We were thinking of doing English for like 20 mins, Spanish for the same and then once it hits about 11 having the band come to close out the reception until around 1. Am I being unfair to not want the band? Anyone have any suggestions on what we should do?

I don’t think you need to understand Spanish to enjoy the music. People tend to enjoy music from a variety of cultures and languages. It’s your fiancés wedding too and he should see himself and his family and culture represented in your wedding as well. I think having the band for a portion of the reception is a fair compromise.

If you know that your husband and his family will enjoy that type of music you should agree to it. I am Hispanic and my FH is white, I told him your dilema, and he said that he didn’t care if he didn’t understand the music, as long as people are having fun.

Even though I personally don’t listen to that type of music it’s fun to watch people dance to it, so I’m sure your family will think the same. Plus wouldn't you want to embrace his culture.

    Hey Keyaira!!

It can be easy to get caught up in planning your wedding, wanting to have everything perfect and exactly how you want it. It’s important to remember that it is your FH’s special day also. It sounds like you have already reached a completely fair and reasonable compromise to the situation by having the music you want to play before the band starts at 11.

I wouldn’t worry about your family not being familiar with Mexican music, they do not have to understand the words to enjoy the music. They know that your FH is Mexican and will be incorporating his culture into the wedding also.
