Music, the struggle is so real.

Alexandria, on February 12, 2020 at 3:47 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 19

Okay ladies, and gents for that matter. I need help, DESPERATELY. I am at such a loss for reception music. Like I just have no idea what to do and it's stressing me out so much and I'm not even sure why. FH and I like all types of music, basically a little of everything from every genre. And honestly like I just don't care about what is played like at all, FH is not very helpful, and not in a bad way, just in a nonchalant way. Like "oh just play whatever you want." But I don't know what to tell the DJ, like I have no idea how to say, we don't care play whatever you want? To me that feels dumb to say and not professional on my part. FH also suggested just playing like 80s and 90s hits which I am totally okay with, but is that too broad? We have our DJ lined up already but haven't had the meeting to go over music yet because we booked so far in advance, and my brain is just over analyzing everything about the stupid music. I feel like I'm probably overthinking this, because I am such a planner and have everything planned out sometimes even a year or more in advance and this is just one of those things that I can't quite plan out and it's driving me mad.

So long story long, am i overthinking all of this? Is music something I really need to be stressing this much over, or should I just relax, maybe breath a little, and wait til I have my meeting with my DJ.

Any and all advice appreciated, even if it's just to tell me to take a seat and calm down lol! Smiley xd

Thanks everyone, I love this community and everyone's advice and support! Smiley heart

I was also really stressed about music but in a total opposite way. My fiance is super picky and and I am very laid back and I was worried about finding the right music. But then I met with our DJ and it was all solved. Most DJ's have been doing this for a long time and know exactly how to cater to your needs. And it is probably more fun for them to play with the croud and get a feel for what people do and don't like. You can always send out song request cards with the invites and then have your guests fill up your playlist for you! Wishing you the best of luck, just breath and everything will go splendidly!

If you have an experienced DJ, they should be okay. We told our DJ "our crowd likes a mix of swing dancing country music but also modern club music" which is weird but he totally hit the nail on the head. Typically starting with a more popular or easy to dance to song (maybe a line dance or something everyone knows) is good then they can go from there. We told our DJ to try a little bit of different types then continue playing what worked to get people on the dance floor.

You are definitely overthinking this. You have hired a DJ. This was a great decision. Now trust that DJ to do their job. They will play a mix of music to keep the dance floor busy. It's really that simple. It's fine to give them a list of songs you *don't* want, and any special songs for specific activities (e.g., entrance and cake cutting), but other than that, take this worry off your to do list. Request cards are a great idea, i hadn't thought of that, thank you! And I'm sure you're right about letting the DJ get a feel for the crowd I'm sure it's easier for them anyway since yes they've been doing this a long time lol. I will try my best to breath Smiley tongue Thank you!

MrsD, yes that's quite the combination of styles! I'm so glad he was able to nail it! I do have an experienced DJ, so i just need to trust them, and luckily most of our friends are pretty lively so i'm sure they'll be up for dancing no matter what gets played lol!

Our DJ had us fill out a questionnaire a month before, it had spots to fill in our preference but then also had the option for DJ suggestion or DJ picks. Ask your DJ if they do something similar and that should resolve some of your stress!

We struggled with this as well. We have a broad scope of music we like (country, pop, rap, beach) and were really okay with almost anything the DJ played. We ended up just making a list of our favorite songs from each genre. That gave our DJ an idea of what we liked. We then told him that we were open to anything within the scope/genre of the provided list. It worked out super well for us and we loved everything he played. But in the grand scheme of things, any professional DJ will know exactly what to play to get a party started and keep it going!

Girrrrllll! I'm stressing too about music. Our theme is vintage. We like all kinds of music from the 50s to now but I want to pick music everyone will enjoy. I suggest though, starting out with music you don't want played and just tell that to your DJ. If they've been in this business long enough, they'll know what to play.

I LOVE the vintage theme!! i feel like that will be a wide range of songs but i also think thats a good thing! And is it bad if I don't have anything that I don't want played? Like I don't have any do not play songs or anything like that, that i've seen other people talk about. I can't think of anything that's off limits, is that a bad thing? Smiley amazing

Meghan, oh that's perfect! I feel like my FH could definitely make these lists pretty easily, he's way more into music than I am, and he listens to music constantly. I just don't have time and just don't have a preference but i feel like we could totally do some lists like this and have the DJ go from there, thanks for the suggestion!!!! Smiley smile

No it's not a bad thing! Really the only songs we don't want are the group dance like cha cha slide. I'm just sooo over it lol. I think it's good that you accept all genres. Just tell your DJ to party down

I’d ask a couple close friends and relatives for some song ideas/requests. Make sure to ask people from different age groups as well. Then give that list to your DJ so he can get a feel for the different types of music people will want!

The struggle is REAL! We need to figure out music during seating of ceremony, processionals and recessional. Don’t get me started about during reception. We’re older, fiancé loves country but we know loads of our people hate it so we’re going old r & b and hoping the dj know what he’s doing. It was my most challenging vendor.

Coming from a DJ. We love customers like you. Our job is to read the crowd. Nothing worse then a list because that does a few things it hinders your dj from really getting the crowd going because it handcuffs him to just your suggestions. When meeting with the dj let him know that you are open to any style of music. If you want to give some absolutes either play or no play thats fine but don't give a list. Trust me Dj's HATE that and any that say they don't are just trying to save face lol

We decided to do a request line on our RSVP cards.

Most of the music will be picked by FH anyway as it is his thing really. It will mostly be a mixture of 90-2000s R&B and hip hop with some others thrown in.
