Music ideas

Is there anyone who has had musicians like a saxophone or violin player play at there wedding ? How was your experience with live musicians at your wedding? Is there anyone else on here using real musicians for apart of their music /entertainment? 🤔

As a musician myself, an option I always tell people who are looking for good musicians at an affordable price is to look up a local university music department. If the school has a good school of music, university students are great to work with. They are so willing to give you a quality performance and also they don't charge as much as graduated professionals. Plus, I find it nice to know that my money is being used to support a young person trying to make it through school lol.

I second this! Reach out to local colleges if you’re looking to save money!

I used to play cello and know some good musicians from school who play weddings and events as a side job. An old cellist friend from school even offered to play the ceremony.

So we’re looking into having a cello/violin or cello/viola duo for our ceremony. Our DJ will cover cocktail hour and the reception.

We had a violinist for our ceremony & a strolling accordionist for our cocktail hour. Both were awesome. Much cooler vibe than a DJ. 😊

I’m a violinist and I didn’t want my friends working at my wedding so I hired a violinist and guitarist for my ceremony. It’s beautiful and intimate, something that speakers just can’t imitate. I had a dj for the reception so we could get some more upbeat dance music.

We had a violinist during the dinner part of our reception. Since we did a Disney theme, she played a lot of the Disney love theme songs, as well as some other music. It added a nice touch.

When I was a student I would charge $100 for a ceremony and I also charged an extra $40 for consultation. For hourly hire, I would advertise $50 per hour for reception playing per musician. Most students are willing to negotiate somewhat. I wouldn't pay anything under $100 per player though. I once got paid $75 for a wedding mass and I felt that was too low considering it barely covered my gas for the out of town trip. Granted, while this is lower than the going rate I did not feel right charging a professional rate as I was still a student. Many students have prices higher than this, but definitely make them an offer first.

If university musicians are something you are considering, email or call the school's chamber music professor, violin/viola/cello instructors, or even the ensemble directors and they will help find someone available for you.

We had a guitarist just play for about 90 minutes... during cocktail hour and for during the meal at our reception. It really added a lovely vibe.

OH and how could I forget, my friend played the flute for our ceremony too! I felt like it was so much more special and sounded much better than it coming from speakers.
