Music for Welcome party vs Cocktail hour vs Dinner

Carly, on July 27, 2023 at 5:13 PM Posted in Planning 1 3
Hello! I’ve been working on organizing my (very long) playlist and trying to work out what goes where and when. Obviously anything danceable will be for the latter part of the reception, and I’ll do instrumentals as guests arrive before the ceremony. So I’m left with a lot of oldies/Motown, acoustic songs, and other slower/non-danceable more modern songs.
Do I intermix those 3 for the 3 earlier “events”, or have a different feel for each part, and if so, what should I play when?
Thanks!

We had Motown/oldies playing at our Welcome Dinner. My son (sound designer for the theater) made it up for us after listing to our favorite radio station (Sirius "The Bridge") It was great background music - not too loud or rock. Cocktail hour is usually pretty mellow music, again think"easy listening" as people mingle and chat about how gorgeous you looked (GRIN) I would definitely save all the fun dancing music for after dinner. GOod luck!

I'd simplify and use Spotify for Cocktail Hour and/or the Welcome Dinner. Tropical deep house is loungy yet upbeat to set the mood. The bonus is there aren't distracting lyrics drowning out real guest voices. Plus, the cocktail hour often becomes so loud with people chatting and catching up that you don't hear any music anyway.
