Music During Dinner. Help!

Jolie, on July 16, 2019 at 8:29 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 14

So I just thought of this because I was looking over my DJ information packet and it said I could choose songs to play during dinner. Is this a thing? Is there supposed to be music? If so what kind? I am drawing the largest blank on any of the past weddings I have been to if they had music during dinner!! Did I tune it out completely or was there none Smiley surprise What are you doing??

We told our DJ what genres we like and he’s taking care of the rest. There’s typically low background music during dinner, but we couldn’t care less about the specific songs.

I think it’s pretty typical to play soft music during dinner. I would ask your DJ for recommendations but I would keep it to “dinner style” music since it’s only for a short time.

Definitely play something softly as background noise while people are eating and talking. People tend not to notice background music when it’s playing, but it’s noticeable when it’s missing. Without background music it will just be a bunch of chatter. Also, breaks in music cue a change- like a toast coming, even if it’s just subconscious level.

We are playing some of the older music during dinner - a nod at the grandparents/parents/aunts/uncles generation.

Yes, there is usually some background music during dinner. It is usually something that won't drown out people from talking or distract them. We had a 5-piece band perform Rat Pack tunes during dinner and then a 9-piece band perform more lively music for dancing after dinner.

We're mostly playing instrumentals and classical songs- just enough to create ambience.

My daughter is playing all her favorite heavy metal/goth/emo songs done in instrumental classical music. Cause ya just can't dance to them!

Our friend actually was our DJ for our wedding and it was his first time, so we made the playlists ourselves.

For dinner, we played songs like this:
    - Dean Martin: Ain't That A Kick In The Head, Sway
    - Jason Mraz: I'm Yours
    - Frank Sinatra: Come Fly With Me, The Way You Look Tonight
    - Ben E. King: Stand By Me
    - Thomas Rhett: Die A Happy Man
    - Etta James: At Last
    - The Coasters: Searchin'
    - Elvis Presley: Can't Help Falling In Love
    - Bruno Mars: Marry you
    - The Temptations: My Girl
    - Elton John: Tiny Dancer
    - Tim McGraw: Humble & Kind
    - Louis Armstrong: What A Wonderful World
    - Darius Rucker: Wagon Wheel

We wanted older, more classic songs playing during dinner.

Awesome thanks! I will look into this. I would imagine I can pick some of the slow songs I might not want to dance to but still enjoy. Thanks for the suggestions!

Great point! It's definitely something I never notice but true that it's noticeable when it's missing.

Our DJ has a set list of instrumental music to play as background music during dinner. It's mostly like jazz and orchestra kind of music. Stuff that no one really cares about but it's there as background noise. Lol

I have been working for the last week to put our music together while people are mingling, eating, and drinking for our cocktail party reception before our first dance and the party really begins. I think even at dinner parties, they can be made better or worse by music.

Our playlist for the cocktail hour/dinner timeframe is a mix of love songs that we like but have no meaning to us. I focused a lot on covers of songs, especially by female artists for us, but you would be surprised how sweet a cover can make a song you might not have considered. My top two songs that do this are I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) by Sleeping At Last and Boom Clap by Lennon & Maisey. You'd be surprised how deep that rabbit hole goes! It's all songs most guests know but in a whole new way! Good luck!
