Multiple trials or contract

Fmv, on August 21, 2019 at 9:06 PM Posted in Planning 0 9
So when you were looking for your day of hair/makeup...did you book the place/sign the contract and then eventually have a trial?
Or
Did you have a trial first to see if you liked the work?
My fh is shocked when i told him i have the contract to look over and that i havent had a trial yet.
I told him you sign up with them and then eventually have a trial.
His response? Well you wouldnt order a cake without tasting it would you?
What is the proper way to go about this?
Trial first? Or am i right with signing a contract first

I booked almost a year ago and haven’t done my trial yet. My wedding is in 3 months. If I waited until I was ready for my trial to book, no one would be available.

Oh yeah i totally get that. I guess im asking if anyone did trials like now before booking a salon? My fh thinks i should be having "trials" done now at multiple salons to see what work i like. I told him i dont think its done that way.
Plus who has that much money to do trials at multiple salons

Most people just go from sample photos and reviews before booking, then do the trial later on.

I booked with a $200 deposit. If I go with them, that goes toward the overall bill, otherwise, I'm out $200. It's like that a lot with catering too

I had my trial first and then signed a contract. I wanted to make sure I liked their work first.

It’s just too expensive to have multiple trials, plus I had to travel out of state and I couldn’t schedule a bunch of trials. In comparison, cake tastings are way cheaper and I could do several in the same day. I booked my HMUA and then had my trial after. It all turned out great and I know I made the right choice.

So, I actually found a woman who does the trial first and then you book her. Aside from her being amazing, this is why I chose her. It's 100 for the trial, but if you don't book her it is free. Everyone else wanted me to buy the cow before trying the milk and I thought that was insane.

Unless you have an unlimited budget, I don't see how this would work. Trials cost a lot of money!! As soon as you say the hair and makeup is for a wedding, the price goes up. I interviewed several makeup artists when looking for mine, and they all did it the same way. You sign the contract, and then have the trial later down the road. I did my trial about 10 months before the wedding, but that was mostly for me--to make sure I knew what look I wanted for my wedding. If they had done a terrible job, then I would have asked to cancel the contract, and probably had to forfeit my deposit. But they did a good job, so I'm going with them for the wedding.

Tell FH this is how it works. Btw, my deposit was only $50, so if you go with someone like that, and then end up hating their work, you wouldn't be out much money if you cancelled. The only problem with that is the timing. If you wait until just a couple months before the wedding to have the trial, then hate it, you'll have a hard time finding someone else who is free on your date.
