Multiple Cake Flavors? Give Me All the Cake

Catti Labelle, on July 21, 2017 at 5:51 PM Posted in Planning 0 18

Hey everyone! FH and I had a cake tasting a few nights ago with a fabulous baker. We haven't booked her yet, but she suggested scheduling another tasting (for free!) because she has a million cake flavors and fillings. We LOVED a few flavors and she suggested having a different flavor on each tier (most likely 3).

When it comes to serving, how does that work? We planned on having the guests served at their tables. Do guests just get served a random flavor? For those with multiple cakes or different tiers, what did you do?

We are planning on doing multiple flavors too! In weddings I have attended in the past (and what we are planning on doing at ours), the cake was sliced and placed on a table. That way they can choose what they like the best.

ETA: I would also have the flavors labeled on the table so guests know what they are grabbing and can avoid flavors/fillings/frostings they either dislike or may be allergic to.

We have 4 flavors because well, we couldn't make up our minds so they offered to do each layer another flavor.

We are having little signs that say what each of the flavors are on the table. I ended up with the random flavor thing once, it wasn't good. I was allergic to the filling.

We are going with a 3 tier cake and cutting the top tier (not saving it).

Top: Red Velvet and Banana (not my choice, but my FH)

Middle: Red Velvet and Viennese cream

Bottom: Red Velvet with Raspberry mousse

Then we are going a half sheet that is vanilla cake with Viennese creme and fresh strawberries for those who don't like chocolate.

For the dessert course we served a dessert sampler trio: berry tart, cheesecake, and chocolate truffle pyramid. We had two flavors of cake, but it was served on the dessert buffet. (Due to guest allergies, there was nothing with nuts or food coloring.) Half of it was put in boxes the hotel supplied, for guests to take home.

Hmm ok, did you have or are your going to have the MC/DJ/DOC call each table to get their slices like a buffet dinner? Our venue is a little narrow and I would like the cake cutting and serving to be pretty efficient. We are thinking of also adding a sundae bar, but we may scrap that if it would cause too much traffic.

    We really loved these flavors:

Valrhona milk chocolate with chocolate truffle ganache

Pink lemonade with lemon chiffon curd

And Madagascar vanilla bean butter with vanilla chai spice filling

They were seriously like heaven in our mouths and the baker also has a champagne cake that we didn't taste. Apparently that's her most popular flavor, so now we've got to try it.

Good question. I did not think about that. I have two flavors for my 3 tier cake (top and bottom are the same). I am having a plated dinner reception so the cake will be served to each guest. I will have to ask my wedding planner how to handle this.

From what I remember with previous weddings I have attended, after the cake cutting, they take it back and cut it and it can take a bit of time depending on how big the cake is. So by the time they bring it out, people are in different places (some on the dance floor, some at the bar, some at their tables, or mingling elsewhere), and people just went and got it at the dessert table as they pleased. I don't recall people being dismissed by tables because everyone is scattered by that time of the night and not necessarily at their tables. It's not like dinner where everyone is sitting and doing that at the same time. In my experiences, there wasn't an issue with too many people crowding the table at once.

But if you have a narrow area near the dessert table and are worried about traffic, I think it would be fine to have the DJ dismiss people by table. I'd ask your DOC what has worked the best in the past at the venue.

Those flavors sound amazing! We are getting a pink champagne layer in ours. I was surprised by how much I loved it. Our baker said it was also her most popular flavor, with a cream cheese/fresh strawberries filling. Yummmm. Once I tried it, I knew we had to have it :-)

I had 4 tiers and 4 flavors. They only cut the bottom two so we made sure those were the chocolate and vanilla(ish) tiers!

I've never been to a wedding where we grabbed our own cake. FH said he's never been to a wedding where he was served cake. After much back and forth at our tasting, we ended up sticking to just 1 flavor for the wedding cake and 1 flavor for the groomscake. When served (I won that argument!), guests are asked which one they want. I'm just hoping there is enough of each flavor to go around so everyone can get what they want.

We did multiple flavors at my first wedding and luckily we had plenty of cake that we put a small slice of each on each plate. I have also been to several weddings where they put them out on the dessert table and you grab your choice throughout the night.

I went to a wedding once that had different flavored tiers and I couldn't tell you now what the other three were but one was a White Russian cake - vanilla cake with a buttercream filling made with Kahlua and vodka. So very good!

I went to a wedding where the groom requested wedding pie. It was wonderful. All sorts of flavors and ice cream.

Our cake had two different flavors. The staff distributed it at random. We cut into the bottom tier, and the top tier came home with us.

ETA: our flavors were chocolate with chocolate mousse filling, and vanilla with strawberry filling.

@fw2L210, that pink champagne cake sounds so yum!

Everyone's desserts sound amazing! Now I need to go make a sad mug cake to fulfill my cake craving.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I'll play around with one of those floorplan programs for the layout and will talk to my DOC to see if a cake bar would work.

Why not just have different flavors on each layer? Every tier would be constructed the same but one layer in the cake would be for instance chocolate and the following layers strawberry and vanilla? In this way, everyone tastes everything.
