MUA Regret - help!!

Ashley, on April 19, 2017 at 12:04 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 8

Back in February I found an amazing makeup artist who works with my photographer. I reached out to her to see if she was available for my date and unfortunately she wasn't, but she said she'd love to set me up for a consult with another makeup artist who works freelance on her team.. so we set up our consult for the following weekend. I went and gave them a check for $200, $100 for the consult and $100 as a holding fee to hold our date. 50% of the balance would then be due after signing the contract and we'd be officially booked.

So I gave all the information I could at the time, and signed the contract. The artist who I met with said she'd have the head artist get back to me on final cost and get my 50% deposit from me. So a few days later I'm working on my timeline and realize it would be impossible to have makeup done on 7 girls by one artist in time for pictures given the time estimates my MUA gave me.

So I reached out to them (my MUA and the lead) asking for a second artist for the day, and after some convincing (they really didn't seem to want to book 2 artists for some reason) they finally agreed. And POOF! Haven't heard a word from them since. It's been almost 2 months and I'm not sure what I should do.. I haven't heard back about if a second artist was booked, what this will cost me, and nothing has been said to me about getting my deposit from me.. looking back im regretting choosing them. My trial wasn't bad, but looking back I wasn't in love, I feel like I booked her because I felt guilty backing out. Her goal is to be doing makeup for film, not weddings so deep down in my gut I knew she wasn't really excited to be doing my makeup if that makes sense, but I ignored it at the time. The check we wrote for them on the day of the trail was just finally cashed by them, but still not a word about getting a 50% deposit from me to finalize the booking. So I have no clue what's going on or what to even say to them? Honestly I'd really just love to have the salon that's doing my hair do my makeup as well, they've been nothing but helpful and it would be one less separate bill to pay. Does anyone have any words of advice or experience with backing out of a vendor as nicely as possible?

If they are a pain to work with and you weren't in love with the results, just shoot them an email thanking them for their time and letting them know that you have decided to go in another direction. You can ask for your holding deposit back since you never wound up signing a contract, but I would expect to forfeit that money.

My make up artist is doing 7 girls by herself. We're getting up at like 8ish. Ceremony is at 4:30. And doing photos beforehand as well. We aren't doing a first look but getting as many photos out of the way as possible.

@Faith we can't get onsite until 9 and our ceremony is at 4 :/ we're doing a first look in addition to pictures. Our venue is also requesting we be finished pictures an hour before the ceremony if possible to give us time to relax and be "hidden away" while guests arrive.. we're getting married at a barn in an open area and I guess they don't want to risk guests seeing me before my walk down the aisle, so as frustrating as that one rule is, I understand.

I reached out to my photographer too about what time she would need us to be ready by. I went through a hundred scenarios and plans in my brain, along with her and the hair salons words of advice, to figure out how we could all get done before pictures and it just wasn't happening. After I explained everything the makeup artists understood. I even told them I was all ears if they had any other ideas.. I would surely trust them as this is their area of expertise and not mine, but they eventually agreed. All of my other vendors have had excellent communication and have been super receptive so idk if I'm just being too hard on them.. I just feel like 2 months is so long to have not gotten any responses back and the contract has yet to be cleared up

She can keep working on the bridesmaid while you go do your first look. I don't see this as being much of an issue, other than you weren't completely in love with the trial.

You could have her do everyone's make up where you are and then head over to the venue when they're finished. Are you all traveling together? Where will you be before the venue?

You should be able to do 7 people's hair and makeup in 4 hours. That would be 9-1 and 2 hours for pictures.

A nice way to do it would be honest, "Hi - I booked on xx date........ I haven't heard anything about xxx.......at this point I am going to need to cancel. Thank you for the opportunity".
