MUA - No Contract?

Alejandra, on February 5, 2014 at 5:49 PM Posted in Planning 0 17

I decided maybe I shouldn't do my own hair/makeup for the wedding after all so I started reaching out to some hair/makeup artists in the city where we will be getting married.

After some emailing back and forth, I ask one of them if the price listed includes hair and regular makeup (just double checking since that's what the website said). She responds with a number $30 more than what is listed and says "and no I don't have a contract thanks".

lol okay thanks but no thanks. Isn't expected that all vendors should have a contract to protect both sides?

Yes. You need to have one, to protect everyone. Keep looking.

Definitely not ok with working with anyone without a contract! I can't imagine why any professional wouldn't have one.

Yikes! I wouldn't chance hiring someone like that without a contract. It definitely protects both of you. Keep looking. Smiley smile

I didn't have a contract with my hair/make up people - but I also used the salon I have been going to for 10+ years (that I also worked at).

ETA - I think they do actually have a contract for brides, I just didn't do one because my relationship with them.

Keep looking! You should most definitely have a contract no matter what. I wouldn't see why she wouldn't have one it doesn't just protect the client, it protects the provider as well! Jeesh some people I tell you!!

DO NOT PROCEED WITHOUT A CONTRACT. Many relationships have been destroyed over situations just like this. Any pro who won't give you a contract is not a pro.

I do not have a contract for my hair/MUA lady. She's been my hair stylist for 8-9 years now. She did my hair/MU for senior ball in high school! I trust her completely and she's the only person I let touch my hair & whom I can say to "do whatever" to my hair and I know I'll love it.

With that said, if it were anyone else, I would want a contract- even if I knew the person or if they were a friend. Definitely do not proceed without a contract!!... I sound like a hypocrite but I explained my situation lol.

I just wanted to point out that ANY AGREEMENT is a contract. so an exchange of emails agreeing that A gives X in exchange for B giving Y is a contract. it makes sense to have every little detail worked out, and a pre-written contract is always easier, but i can see small vendors depending on email exchanges.

a vendor who changes the price without explanation and seems to have an attitude? i would avoid them contract or not.

I thought not having a contract was best because if I found someone more affordable I could just dump them but after all the horror stories I'm going with a contract for everything. Get the contract to ensure your day or at least your money back if they skip out on you.

I did not have a contract with my hair stylist, because I had been going to her for about 2 years. Day of charged me 75 more than quoted and each bridesmaid ( i had 8) 25 more than quoted. I obviously no longer go to her.

I don't have a contract with my make up person, but she is someone we know and did my sister's wedding as well. I'm sure if we asked her she'd happily provide a contract, but I trust that it won't be a big issue. I also know that if there are problems, I'm not that bothered about having my sister do my makeup for me so it's not something I'm stressed about.

I'd be adamant that I get a contract if I didn't know the person though, or if it was something that you really cared about. I'd also not book her if she is just charging you more than what she advertises. A contract is good to lock in prices so there is no chance they could raise the price randomly.

I give all my brides a signed contract. It details the services rendered and it also secures your date and it covers all the basics, allergies to any products were disclosed to me the price quoted, deposit given, how many ppl are getting their makeup done. etc.

Yeah that seemed like a rude way to respond to your inquiry. Mine doesn't do contracts either but my mother has been going to her for a long time now and swears we can trust her. I told her I'm uncomfortable with that but she says it'll be ok. We'll see!
