mua decision

Emma, on July 26, 2019 at 1:02 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 6
I will admit I am a long time browser but this is my first post. I am looking for some advice on my makeup artist search. I have a hair stylist who I have known for over a decade. I have always known she would do my hair for my wedding day. I asked her for recommendations for make up artists. She gave me information for someone who works in her salon that she has done weddings with in the past. They don't work together exclusively. I reached out to the makeup artist and had a phone call with her. I didn't do much looking around at other artists before the call. She seemed knowledgeable and nice on the phone. I wasn't overly impressed with her Instagram. I told her on the phone that I was pretty sure I was going to move forward with hiring her but wanted to spread out the deposits since we just hired the DJ and the photographer. She wants half down for the deposit. She sent me the contract and has penciled me in but I haven't signed it yet. Since she sent the contract I have been having some hesitations... I am just not sure if her style is what I am looking for. My question is am I jerk if I decide I want to go with someone else?

No, you're not a jerk for wanting someone that suits your style to do your makeup for your wedding. She's a professional, I'm sure this isn't the first time a client has decided to go a different direction. You're also giving her 15 month notice, so I think she'll be okay.

    Go with someone else.
I am also searching for a MUA at this time, and have decided against people based purely on their work on Instagram. It's a great way to showcase their work and if you don't like their style don't hire them.

Have you considered doing a trial with her first? Maybe the stuff on her Instagram was exactly what these other clients asked for. It may be that if you tell her exactly the look you are going for, even provide inspiration pictures, she can recreate that. Don't just assume by looking at her photos that she can't do what you want.

Schedule a trial, earlier rather than later. If, after giving her your inspiration photos, and telling her exactly what you want, she still doesn't give you that, then you can feel confident in telling her you've decided to go a different direction.

Thank you for the advice Cristy. I am planning from afar so I wouldn't be able to do a trial until I am home for Christmas. I am nervous that will be too late to find someone else.

Well, that does complicate things. I forget about all of you planning long distance, as I'm getting married only a short distance away from where I live.

So, ok you're going home at Christmas. That still gives you 10 months (or close) to find someone, if you aren't happy with this one. Just a thought, but if you schedule a trial for when you are home, you'll definitely know if this is the one or not. Then, like I said, you have almost 10 months to find someone else. You didn't say how long you would be home for, but maybe that can be something else you do while you're there, look for a makeup artist.

Can you get any help from family in the area? Your mom? Sisters/Friends? They can get some research started for you regarding MUA in the area. Or, maybe talk to your hair stylist friend again, and tell her your concerns for the one she recommended. She may have other names of artists in that area that have a style closer to your vision.

lol I never give up, so this feels like a problem I want to solve! Smiley smile Good luck.

Thanks Cristy. Since we are getting married during a very popular time vendors book up quickly. So I am concerned that even 10 months out my options might be limited. My sister is doing some research for me. I have found at least one other Make up artist that I like. I am just feeling guilty about looking around since I told the other lady I was pretty sure I was going to go with her.
