I agree with the evening gowns idea! Nordstrom/Nordstrom Rack also sells evening gowns.

Rent The Runway is a company that has gowns/dresses you can rent and return (like a groomsman suit). My FBIL's wife has used them for every wedding guest dress she's worn, and she swears by them! Much better than spending $$ on a dress you'll wear once.

You could check at Macy's. They offer free shipping on $100 orders (so she could get a few to try on) and then free returns. Hope that helps!

Belk! They take returns for up to six months after you've purchased (as long as you have your receipt). If it's returned, they hold it for five days before they put it back out on the floor.

Azazie and Macys. Got bridesmaid dresses and did MOB try-on dresses through Azazie. My mom ended up buying a dress from a bridal store, but due to covid and changing dates, she is now wearing it for my sisters wedding (more seasonal appropriate) and got a great summer MOB from Macys.

You can try Macy's, JCPenney, Norstroms or bridal places/formal wear places.

I let my mom buy what she wants. I told her the color options (Silver or Navy) and she likes Navy better with her skin tone and then she is doing the shopping for herself and then sending me the options. She's shopped mostly online stores including the Wish app.
