Hello everyone! I had a question about how to best guide the mother of the bride and groom on their dress selection for our wedding. Our wedding will be cocktail attire and at a winery. The mother of the bride and groom seem to have a preference for wearing long, formal dresses, but I felt that may be a bit over dressed given the attire, time of year, and location of the wedding. What length/ style of dresses do the MOB and MOG typically wear for a cocktail attire, summer wedding?

I would suggest a calf length dress like this but ultimately I would let them wear whatever they want if it means a lot to them

Usually the MOB and MOG just choose whatever attire they feel comfortable in. I would express your concerns about their comfort level in the weather at that time, but if they still want to wear long gowns and feel they will be comfortable in them, I would just support their decisions to wear what they want.

I agree with Cece. Also, they won't look out of place if they're a little more formal than the rest of your guests, because they're your mothers.

I don't think it would be weird for the mothers to wear long dresses at a cocktail event. Hopefully they won't be too hot, but you shouldn't worry about it.

My mom wore a l just past the knee dress! She found it at Nordstrom and loved it.

My husband’s mom found her dress at Macys. Our ceremony was in a Catholic Church and we had an evening reception with “cocktail” as the dress code and I think they both looked GREAT.

My wedding is cocktail attire in April. My mom and MIL will be wearing floor length because they are being seated in the wedding but my bridesmaid dresses are also floor length. I’m pretty sure the “rule” is that Whatever length the bridesmaid dresses are is what the mothers length is based off of. Do what you want though!
