Mother Daughter Dance

There are a million posts about father-daughter dance songs, but I rarely see any about mother-daughter dances. There are a million posts about father-daughter dance songs, but I rarely see any about mother-daughter dances. I get it, the tradition and all, but are any women here planning on doing a spotlight dance with their mothers?

My father isn't in my life and even though my relationship with my mother isn't the best, I want to honor her for having been a badass, hardworking single mom, who sacrificed a lot for me and my sister when we were growing up. I don't think it's fair to her to dance with my stepdad, who has only been part of my adult life, over the person who gave birth to me.

Or is anyone dancing with their mother for other reasons, like going against the patriarchal tradition?

Anyway, I'd love to hear from anyone doing this, and any song ideas you have.

Thanks!

Thanks, everyone, for your thoughts, opinion, plans, and stories of what you've done at your weddings!

@Erin B, I casually asked my mom if she would consider it, and she said she would. This was a while ago though, and my wedding is next summer so we still have time to revisit this and talk it through. I'm just trying to see who else has done this or plans on doing this or something similar, and to gather some song ideas if we actually go through with the dance.

I'm doing this! My dad was a sperm donor so he only came into my life about 3 years ago. I'm not even sure if he'll be at the wedding, but even if he decides to come he's just a cool guy I happen to share DNA with. My mom raised me and in many ways played both the "mother" and "father" role. So my mom and I are going to dance in replacement of the father daughter dance. In addition I think I'm going to ask my future father in law to do a dance with me!!

I did this at my first wedding with my mom. We used Carrie Underwoods Mama's Song, it was one of my favorite moments, I also had her walk me down the aisle.

In a wedding world in which giant Jenga blocks and tic-tac-toe games replace the bar at weddings, why in the world would you think twice about doing something beautiful, symbolic, and meaningful to mark the earliest relationship in your life? This will mean the world to your mom. It would mean the world to her even if she didn't find herself a single mom, having to be a badass, and working, working, and working to give you everything she could (and as the years go by, your definition of "the best" will soften). I wish someone would come up with the quintessential song that would honor these heroines, because that's what single mothers are.

I don't know what your musical tastes are, and I'm not a fan of country music, but Carrie Underwood did a song, dedicated to her mom on her wedding day (very touching video, by the way) that probably expresses everything you want to say. I think it's called Mama's song. If that's not your taste, there are plenty of mom honoring songs for you to consider. So grab mom around the waist, and the two of you, have that beautiful, no stress, "we made it, together", dance.

I'm doing a mother daughter dance. My father was hardly ever in my life so my mom raised my sister and I pretty much on her own. I chose "hero" by Mariah Carey because it's one of the songs we'd sing together when I was younger. Also, it's a way to remind her that no matter what we go through ( which has been quite a lot recently) that she'll always be my hero.

My mom and I aren't doing a dance exclusively together, but we have decided to do the thriller dance at my reception with some other guests just because we can! =P

I'm doing a mother/daughter dance as my dad passed away 3 years ago.

We're using Mama's Song by Carrie Underwood. She chose it.

"Mama's Song" seems to be a popular contender. Seriously, I hate country music (with a passion), but when I listened to that song, I teared up (and then I pretended I didn't, lol).

I had her listen to "You're Gonna Be" by Reba. But she wanted Mama's Song.

I'm doing a family dance to We are Family- first having both my parents, then siblings join, then their spouses, then aunts/uncles, etc. I'm doing this partly for feminist reasons (because both my parents raised me and should have the honor) and partly because my father hates being the center of attention in crowds.

As a guest I tend to find these dances so boring and corny- so I wanted to switch it up a bit- and use it as a way to get everyone out on the dance floor

My mom and I will be dancing to a mixed song. Another one bites the dust mixed with Mama's Song by Carrie Underwood. It's such an odd thing, but dancing to Queen's song has been our inside joke since I was 12. Then cut to an actual nice song about a mother's love <3 it's only been my mom and I for about 19 years.

I want to do a mother/ daughter dance with my mom. My grandpa was more there for me than my dad but since he passed my mom has been my rock & I want to honor her & everything she's done for me.

    Thank you everyone!

I hate most country music but I like a few Carrie Underwood songs, so I'll check out "Mama's Song"!

@Amber E, ahh I forgot all about "Hero"! My mom and I love Mariah Carey. We always used to listen to all those 80s/90s power ballad singers.

I am doing a mother daughter dance. My mother played both rolls in my life and my other 6 brothers and sisters. My father was abusive and my mom had to run away with us That's why he is not in our lifes. My mom gave up so much to make sure all of us had food on the table and an education. I know it has been hard for her. My uncle will be walking me down the aisle.
