Most Reliable Airline for Honeymoon

Miranda Landry, on September 12, 2021 at 1:55 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 4

I know this is an unusual topic for a wedding app, but my fiancé and I have found our dream honeymoon, a cruise departing at 6:00 pm from Barcelona, Spain and traveling to Italy, France, and Africa on May 29, 2022. However, we are extremely nervous about booking a flight since many airlines are cancelling flights. We have looked into leaving the night of our wedding (May 27, 2022) which would land us in Barcelona the day before (May 28, 2022) our cruise departure to give us some buffer time if our flight has been cancelled and pushed to the following day, however, we would not be able to make it to the airport on time for any of the scheduled flights. This means we’d have to leave on May 28, 2022 and be scheduled to land in Barcelona the morning of our cruise departure. If our flight is cancelled, we wouldn’t be able to make it to our cruise. Can anyone let me know what the most reliable airlines during the pandemic have been? We have options of either flying with TAP, United, Aer Lingus, Swiss International, British Airways, or Iberia.

I strongly urge you not to schedule a flight to arrive on the same day as a cruise departs--especially if you are traveling internationally (trust me, been there done that). No matter how reliable an airline is, there are many factors out of their control (weather, mechanical issues, flight crew shortage). If you absolutely have no other choice, be sure to have travel insurance and a Plan B on how to get to next port in case plane is delayed. You might want to check out Kayak com for other flight options/airlines.

I agree- is there a cruise that goes a few days later? Besides the stress & not sleeping before the wedding, add jet lag to the mix. I’d see about flying to Barcelona 3-4 days before sailing. That gives you a few days to acclimate to the time difference plus you can tour around Barcelona.
A Barcelona cruise is on my bucket list- I’m so super jealous! Hope this helps!

Yeah unfortunately as awesome as this trip sounds, I agree that the timing feels like a major issue. Personally, I’d opt to save that specific trip maybe for an anniversary, and plan a different trip for this time around. Both hurrying out of my wedding to catch a flight and/or arriving in the city mere hours before cruise departure sound not fun and more stressful than they are worth. Also, as mentioned, the day after my wedding was basically the most tired I’ve ever been in my life. We paused for a quick breather (mon & tues) before leaving Wednesday for our little post wedding trip, and it was the best decision for us as by the time we got to our destination we were able to totally relax.

We also wanted a pretty major big deal trip for a honeymoon, so ended up pushing it off for a later date when we could really devote our whole focus to trip and trip prep and really make the most of it, so we had a delayed honeymoon and right after the wedding did a mini moon. Still a great perfect post wedding trip but shorter/cheaper/closer, and it worked out really well for us even though it wasn’t our dreamHoneymoon yet.
I don’t think there’s any one airline more prone to delays or cancelation— you have a list there of some very reputable carriers, but airlines and schedules have been in major flux across the board with covid stuff (delta has always been a go to for me and super consistent but the 2 times I’ve used them in covid era one flight route was eliminated all together (rebooked no issue but definitely a different timeline now!) and one condensed flights so instead of 2 runs a day it only did 1….the one that was 5 hours later than I was originally scheduled for) …although cancelation policies are a lot more liberal now, issues seem to be affecting everyone — THAT said, any time I’ve run into a major schedule change I have been able to cancel and rebook elsewhere . But, that definitely runs the risk of potentially costing more !

Thanks everyone! I think we’ve decided on saving this trip for our 1 year wedding anniversary after receiving all of your advice. The timing just isn’t right and we’d rather wait until the international airlines are more reliable.
