Moscow Mule without the mug

LauraR, on May 25, 2017 at 8:12 AM Posted in Planning 0 18

I'm planning on serving wine, beer, and two signature drinks which will be white sangria and moscow mules. I'm not a huge drinker and when I do drink it's typically wine, beer, or sangria. So we just did mules since they're popular right now and the feel of them went with the vibe of the wedding. I wanted to do the copper mugs but decided pretty quickly that they're not in the budget. I'm going to double check with the venue to see if they have any connections to rent them but I'm not hopeful.

But I didn't really realize that the copper mugs are such a big part of the mule. Is it that bad if I serve them in regular rocks glasses? I also saw that you can get copper pitchers that would be much more cost effective. What if the bar tender mixed pitcher-size batches and at least poured out of those? I thought maybe that would get this "special taste" that apparently comes from the copper...

Thoughts?

I don't drink them but my cousin does and she will drink them in any glass she can get it in.

I'm not sure it matters that much, but like I said, I don't drink them

I honestly don't think it matters. It's a good sig drink because it can be made in batches; a lot of times if the sig drinks have to be made one by one it leads to a huge clog at the bar.

My family would think it was odd and that it wasn't really a mull, but they wouldn't think less of you, and would drink it anyway. If it were me and i couldnt get copper mugs, I would go for a different drink though.

I love Moscow Mules but do not like the mug because it gets soooo cold. I will always ask for a rocks glass. People will drink however they are served. Smiley smile

I love Moscow Mules and will drink it even if it's not in a copper mug, so I think it's fine.

I would pick a different drink - at least for my crowd I wouldn't do moscow mules without the copper mug.

I did them in copper pitchers for the exact reason you mentioned. I probably could have scrounged up 15-20 of them from close friends and family and our kitchen but decided I didn't want those to "walk away" with guests and I couldn't justify the rental price of them. Let me assure you--there were zero complaints about any alcohol served. If they don't want the drink without the mug, they have several other options.

ETA I found copper pitchers cheap on Amazon. Bought 3. Now I have one, mom has one and mil has one.

We just talked to the venue about this this weekend when we visited. I love Moscow Mules! I also basically love anything with ginger so they will totally be our signature drink. Our venue also doesn't have the mugs but my guest list isn't very picky. I do like the idea of the pitchers though! It would make it fun and a bit easier for the bartender.

You can certainly order them for the day tho. We have had plenty of couples do that.

We drank Moscow Mules out of wine glasses at Thanksgiving because it was all my parents had...

    I would totally not judge.

Just so you're aware, many of the lower cost copper mugs on the market actually are stainless steel or have SS linings, which defeats the purpose of the copper mug for taste purposes. I think serving it in a glass is perfectly fine.

I ordered a custom bar sign on Etsy that has the mules listed. I suppose I could try to erase the chalk and write my own if I were desperate.

But I'm leaning towards doing the pitchers. Thanks @APZ for the lead! I'm definitely going to look at Amazon.

@firstoneat56, I have read that! I also saw that a lot of the pitchers have the lining, especially the ones that are $25 instead of $50. We have 65 guests so I may just buy two pitchers for $50. $100 definitely beats closer to $400.

I love mules and will drink them out of any glass. Also, I work at a restaurant and we serve mules in glass because the owners don't care to take the risk of wasting money when they walk away. I've never had a single customer complain-and many order a second!

The copper MAKES the mule! I'm a huge Kentucky mule fan (bourbon instead)

So funny ... We were JUST having this conversation the other day. Moscow Mules will be the Groom's signature drink, but we don't want to pay for the mugs! We are having an open bar, so we are already stretching the budget for that. I think that people will drink it out of whatever and it is not that big of a deal. I am sure that some people will question the mug choice, but who cares - There will ALWAYS be someone that chooses to criticize at least one aspect of your wedding. You can't please everyone, but it seems wasteful to me to order 100 copper mugs that you may never use again.

I do not think you need the mugs. They are delicious no matter what!
