Monogramming Connundrum - BM's w/no middle name

Kelly, on April 22, 2016 at 10:39 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12

How do you do a monogram for someone who has no middle initial? Two of my BM's, my cousin (unmarried) and FSIL (married), are both without one. Do I just do the first initial for the cousin? Or two letters for first/last? For the FSIL, I'm thinking of using her maiden name as the middle name?

I've looked on several etiquette 101 sites and haven't found anything definitive on this so hope there are some monogram experts out there!

Sorry, not any help, but it made me chuckle. =D

I'm assuming this is for the BM gifts? I'd just ask them. In fact, ask them if they would like something monogrammed at all. There are many people (myself included) who would rather not have something monogrammed.

Or just spell out the entire first names?

Can you do their first names spelled out? Or just first initial? I am anxious about using all initials because 3 of my girls are engaged and may end up changing their names to any variation of middle, maiden, married name.

I'm missing the problem here. Why not just use their first initial and last initial? A LOT of people don't have middle names, I'm one of them. I think you're making a mountain out of a molehill.

For the robes I got for my bridal party, I knew my SIL was getting married 7 months after me, and my sister was in the middle of changing her last name, I just did their first initial letter. I had a monogram with my new last name.

If they want monograms, I would do the first name for the unmarried cousin and maybe just the last initial for the FSIL since she is already married.

Just skip the monograms altogether. Do people actually wear that stuff?
