Money.... and work Black Out dates :/

Mrs., on April 23, 2011 at 10:13 PM Posted in Planning 0 16

Blah, I'm so upset. My FH JUST got a good job that could get him good money. Before he was a college teacher part time, which left him poor with no income during vacations. He got a job with me at Sunglass Hut, as a store manager for the new Macy's branch on the east coast. Finally, we thought, we can have money to put in our share for the wedding (my parents were nice enough to help Smiley smile)

Then, just today we found out (this is after months of hijm being a manager, and no one told us...) that December is a blackout month! NO VACATIONS ALLOWED FOR MANAGERS!!! We also found out that our yearly trip to Reno for a bowling tournament in June.... ANOTHER BLACKOUT MONTH! the only two of the year.... REALLY?!?! :/

He's gunna email his boss to see if he could have an exception this time since he was not aware and they're both already paid for.... but I'm just annoyed and wanted to vent Smiley sad thanks for listening lol..

I've definitely heard of this practice before and I can completely understand it. In a retail situation it is important for peak sales times to be well staffed, especially because there are often less experienced temp employees. However, I think this should have been discussed with him when he was offered the job. I've always been asked in a retail job if there was any specific time I was going to need off.

This is my life Smiley smile I too am in management at a retail place. Hence our October wedding, right past back to school blackout period and right before christmas season blackout period.

I'm not shocked at all for December. The June surprises me more, but as said this should have been discussed during the negotiations for the job.

FH has blackout dates on travel for March-September at his office, because that's their super busy time (he's a partner in a mechanical shop, does the business side of things). But he talked to his boss explaining that we were getting married, and his boss laughed and said of course that's an exception!! Hopefully FH's boss will say the same...

Haha yeah, December is actually a super busy month, people buying nice sunglasses as gifts (more common than you'd expect, I was surprised too lol)... but not until like the week of christmas. Yet they black out the WHOLE month, apparently! I had no idea. Smiley sad and yeah, we both thought it would be like his other jobs - they black out certain dates (holidays, black friday, etc etc) but no, they have that, PLUS entire months. We're waiting to hear back from his boss, but I guess it's a good thing we're doing a cruise wedding, it's way less expensive so it wouldn't be too big a loss...

I feel much better after getting some sleep btw, thanks for the thoughts guys Smiley smile

That sucks! Here's to praying for you that your manager lets him off the hook, but if you work at the same place too, then why does he have blackout but you don't? HOw'd you get out of it?

That sucks, but his time off requests within a 6 month period of starting should have been discussed during the interview. I think he may actually get fired for this. I understand he had these things scheduled first, but he didn't disclose them. He is the manager! If he gets time off during black out dates, how can he enforce the no time off for other employees? How can he expect the other manager to pick up ALL the slack during the busiest times of the year?

The wedding is important- but don't be surprised if it's not allowed, or he is fired when he takes the time off.

Yeah, MOST retail stores have blackout dates through out the year. Usually the beginning of summer (due to the pick up in shopping for summer vacations) and the Christmas Holidays beginning Black Friday and ending around MID January (got to include time for returns.) Then it starts all over for Valentines day, etc..... Sorry for you bad luck, but don't expect that corporate will allow it just because he wasn't made aware.

Bre~ you are going on a cruise in December, that's why! many many people hit the beaches and take cruises during the winter, hence the need for sunglasses and your FH! Smiley smile hope it gets worked out!
