Monarch vs. Painted Ladies Butterfly Release

Private User, on May 16, 2014 at 3:39 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 56

I am going to do a butterfly release, it is decided so please spare me any comments against it. I HAVE done my research, it is not harmful to the butterflies, it's not an ecological or environmental issue where I live. (they are native and helpful to the area), they are allowed at my venue, and yes I know some die but I know the procedure for how to best have a successful one and it will work out well for my area/time of year and resources to keep them cool and warm the day of, etc.

SO all that said, let's get to the topic - so, there are two main options to release: the Monarchs or the Painted Ladies. Monarchs are bigger and more expensive, the Ladies are much smaller but more affordable.

My question is simply this, to those who have seen these before, which ones were they? I want to know if the Painted Ladies are big enough to have nice photos, good look flying, or if it really is worth it to pay the extra for the monarchs. (feel free to also suggest good place to purchase)

Like I said, keep that attitude to yourself. I understand their are varied opinions, but my mind is made up. This is not helpful to me, it's just rude.

I have never seen one - but Monarchs are gorgeous. What is the price difference? (If that's okay to ask!)

I have only seen a monarch release at a wedding in person.

PSA: several guests were afraid of bugs/butterflies and screamed every time they fluttered near them.

But I did a quick google search and I would say that you should be fine with painted ladies, they show in pictures just fine!

I've never seen a butterfly release done successfully. There was definitely no swarm of butterflies taking flight. They've always been lethargic and sort of take off one by one over the course of several minutes.

My sister did this years ago and they used monarch butterflies. They looked pretty awesome in the photos and they landed on the groom's nose before flying off.

I know you don't want to hear it but the consensus here is going to be don't do it. I'm absolutely terrified of butterflies and would probably just leave.

Monarchs are poisonous - so if they're near food enough to fall in...

OMG they are not endangered nor poisonous. They wouldn't be around food, and these are raised specifically for this purpose so you're not harming the species or the individual butterflies. If you want to get on your soapbox do yourself a favor and know the facts first, cuz you just make yourselves look dumb. And once again I said SPARE ME these comments, they only serve to spread negativity, not needed here.

Thank you FutureMrsForbes for the helpful post.

Didn't realize so many people were skiddish about them. Why are you afraid of them? They can't hurt you.

    Thanks for the feedback.

Actually, they are poisonous - they have a toxin that's a defence mechanism and if someone eats them they can get sick.

Note I didn't tell you not to do it (although I am against it). I just pointed out Monarchs are poisonous. I guess you were not able to infer that I was suggesting the other butterfly.

    Calm down.

They won't be anywhere near food anyway so not even a factor. My question stricty has to do with aesthetics and that's the only thing I want answers on

I'm also pretty afraid of butterflies, it's actually moths that I really don't like but I had some bad experiences as a kid that I think carried through to adulthood. I don't like flying insects in general lol! But I do think monarchs are pretty from a distance, so I'd probably go with those if it's in your budget. Painted Ladies remind me a little too much of moths haha!

Sigh. If you must, pick the ones you like more. Your'e right. They aren't endangered according to to IUCN. They are just way too plentiful (leading to environmental pollution)

How about raising your own from a science kit (it can be cheaper and fun, especially if you have kids in the family that can help).

Oh lord...People hate this stuff because of two things - they are not "awake" when you release them and they just splat on the ground in a heap and do not fly - or they fly at people and people go bananas trying to run away.

No they are not endangered as I said they are raised here. The farms that sell for weddings raise for that purpose so it's a non-issue
