Moissanite verse diamond

Jade, on January 2, 2020 at 9:31 PM Posted in Planning 0 14
Hey everyone! I’m looking at a wedding band that has moissanite stones instead of diamonds. My engagement ring is a diamond. Does anyone know if there is a noticeable difference between the two stones or if I should just stick to a diamond wedding band so that it’s more cohesive? Or if the moissanite is a good stone to have on the wedding band because I do want it to be durable and everything to last through the years!

If you didn't have a diamond I'd say most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference. However, diamond has more of a white sparkle while moissanite has a rainbow sparkle, so next to each other it might be more noticeable than it ordinarily would be if you just had moissanite.

My ring is moissanite and all I am going to say is that I am clumsy has heck and it has not for some miraculous reason not broken off my hand lol. I love it and it looks like a diamond. I want the same for my band. May I ask where you are looking for wedding bands so I may also look there?

Right now I’m looking at an Etsy store called “CoolRingJewelry”. I also found some on brillianearth.com!

I agree with Erin. They don't look all the different until they are right against each other. Also, diamond is the hardest mineral, so it is more durable than moissanite.

How big is the moissanite? My jeweler recommended not using moissanite for pave because they are brittle at that size.

Moissanite ranks 9.3 on the Mohs scale of hardness, second only to the diamond, which is a 10. Only a diamond can scratch it, so you should not clean your moissanites and diamonds together. It's a very hardy stone. For reference, rubies and sapphires are a 9.

In my experience, most lay people can't tell the difference between moissanite and diamond, or even know what a moissanite is. On the hearts and arrows cut, the rainbow in the stone itself is not super obvious, but if the light is hitting your stone at the correct angle, the stone will cast tiny rainbows. This typically happens when I'm driving on a very sunny day, and there is shade on my steering wheel.
The general rule with moissanite is the bigger you go, the more noticable it is. I think up to a 3 carat DEW you'd be fine.
The hearts and arrows cut has the the on and off, twinkle type sparkle of a diamond. The round brilliant has more of a long, spiky, splintery sparkle, almost like a kalaidescope.
I think it's more important to match the color of the stones in the band to the e ring. When you look at them side by side, a near colorless moissanite, which has a GHI range, has a noticably yellow tint compared to the colorless moissanite, which has a DEF range.
    Happy search!

Thank you so much! Here is a picture of my engagement ring and the band I’m looking at. Do you think this would work or should I look for a diamond band? Moissanite verse diamond 1

That would make a beautiful set! Before buying that band, I think you should consider the following:

-how hard will it be to find moissanite in that shape or size if you need to replace it for whatever reason? What if a stone falls out? For stones that size, I don't think there is a big price difference between moissanite and diamond. I would be inclined to go diamond just for durability/ease of finding replacement stones/consistency. At that size, I doubt you'd notice a visible difference, however
-is that an eternity band? It would be near impossible to resize. I prefer 3/4 bands because you can resize it but the plain part of the ring won't show if the ring spins on your finger-have you tried that kind of band with your e ring? It may not sit flush, or you may not like the way it looks with the uniform pave on your e ring, or you may not like that one band is thicker than the other. I am pretty sure I've seen open versions of that band, basically there's a gap in the band so the stone of your e ring can sit in that gap so the rings sit flush
When I was looking for rings, I ordered a bunch of cheap stunt rings off of Etsy. Some sellers will make you a CZ and sterling silver version. We also learned that it's not that pricy to make a custom ring if you use an independent jeweler
Your e ring is STUNNING by the way, beautifully proportioned and sparkly! Have you considered a matching pave chevron to go with it?

Thank you so much! So I actually looked at a diamond version of the band and it’s like 4x the price of the moissanite band so that’s why I was thinking of going that way! We’ve been communicating a lot with this small jeweler who is customizing for FH so maybe I’ll check with them and see what the cost would be. I don’t want an eternity band because it just costs more and I don’t think it’s necessary. The only thing I worry about is how high up the moissanite band sits. My engagement ring diamond sits up pretty high also so A straight wedding band sits right up against it! Thank you for all of your help!

If the stones on the band sit too high to sit flush against your e ring, having a ring with a gap like that should solve the problem, or you could wear that as a spacer in between your e ring and w band. Or maybe the jeweler could skip a stone on the band in the spot where the pear would sit.
With that price difference, I'd do moissanite all the way! The smaller the size, the harder to tell the difference.
Come back with pics! It's going to be so beautiful!

Do you have a helzberg store near you? They carry moissanite and I was able to compare the two. I can say I have a moissanite engagement ring and the diamond band I paired it with looks fine
