Hi Ladies,

A friend of mine recently got engaged and has a Moissanite ring. Has anyone every heard of this type of ring? Does anyone have any pictures of their Moissanite ring?

Hers looked just like a diamond. In fact, if she hadn't told me I would've thought it was one.

Just wondering what other people have to say about Moissanite rings.

Thanks!

My fiance’ and I decided to buy a moissanite after much research and discussion around the topic. We had been looking at real diamonds for quite some time, but I just couldn’t justify spending thousands on a piece of jewelry. Yes- it is the MOST important piece of jewelry to a bride, but when did this idea come into play that we have to spend a fortune on an engagement ring otherwise there will be disappointment. When my parents got married they bought what they could afford, and that was that. Now-a-days people buy what they can’t afford, and try and figure things out financially at a later date.

It wasn’t until I did more research into the diamond mining industry when Moissanite really stuck with me. I am a person who cares about the environment, and when I read about the destruction diamond mining has on our earth, it really boggled me that diamonds have this “symbol of love” when we are destroying the earth to get them! What about the love for mother nature and our earth?? Are diamonds really worth the destruction we are creating? How did owning a fancy diamond begin define a couple’s marriage? It seems as though society has placed this huge expectation on the engagement ring and forgotten all about the real meaning of a marriage.

I read somewhere that for every carat of diamond mined, 1750 tons of earth have to be moved. And I can’t imagine that all that rock and soil are nicely being put back into place afterwards. I watched a compelling documentary by National Geographic called “Diamonds of War.” This documentary is a must watch for everyone in my opinion, as it opens up the dark side of the diamond industry and exposes the real truth of diamond mining, not just the marketed version we get in north America. Sure maybe “blood diamonds” don’t exist anymore, as the industry is not at war, but there are still many, many people in Africa risking and losing their lives to mine diamonds. Many people slave away for days, or weeks, only to find a small stone for an even smaller profit, which is then sold for many more times the amount in north America.

So the big day came, and my fiance’ proposed in such a meaningful and romantic way, and he presented me with the most beautiful Moissanite I have ever seen. I was ecstatic. It wasn’t until we decided to tell a few close friends and family members about our decision to not buy a diamond when things got hard for me. I didn’t realize how judgmental people would be with our choice. We could literally see the judgment and disappointment in some people’s eyes when we told them that the ring was not a real diamond. And instead of inquiring why we made this decision, and what a Moissanite is exactly, some individuals tuned right out and turned right off. This was heartbreaking to me, because not only was I elated about our engagement, but I was proud of my choice to not support diamond mining, but now some people were making me feel cheap and undervalued because of my decision. The ring my fiance’ purchased was from Moissaniteco.com (I am not affiliated with this company in any way, shape, or form), it is a radiant cut, 3 stone trellis, set in palladium. The company was wonderful to deal with, we had to send the ring back initially because of a minor flaw we noticed, and Moissaniteco paid the return shipping for us and did not cause us any grief in the process. The ring they sent us back is perfect, and they returned it quickly so I did not go without my ring for a long period of time. If I could make any changes to my ring, it would be to make the stones a tad smaller because my fingers are so small and I am not used to wearing larger jewelry. The center stone is 1 carat and the 2 side stones are .5 carats. This is the smallest size this ring is available in, which is too bad because I wouldn’t mind it being a tad smaller. And the reason is because when people see my ring they think it costs thousands of dollars, which it didn’t, so then I begin to feel guilty thinking we are “deceiving” people, so I tell them it is a Moissanite, then I get the poor reactions...It’s a vicious cycle.

Looking back now I wish we had not told anyone about our decision to buy a Moissanite and let people believe what they want about it. It would have saved the both of us a lot of endless explanations and disappointment from others. A family member told me that I would have been more upset with myself if I had decided to support and buy a diamond, and she was right. Deep down I am proud of my decision, and maybe one day I won’t let those comments or looks disappoint me. The truth is people probably would have judged us anyway even if we went with a diamond, whether it was too big or too small people love to judge one another in any way they can. I am happy with our decision, and I would tell anyone considering a Moissanite just how beautiful and wonderful they are. They sparkle much more than a regular diamond, and they are flawless, AND they are manufactured in a conflict free environment. I often dream about Moissanite’s taking over the world and there being an end to diamond mining 

My advice to those seeking a Moissanite would be to think wisely about your decision to tell others about your choice. Because even those closest to you may react in a way you are not prepared for, and you don’t want to take away the excitement and special moments from your engagement because of negative and judgmental people. It’s a sad world we live in when others care more about how much you paid for your engagement ring and not the fact that you are engaged!

    Good luck, and God Bless.

I bought a set three years ago in Mexico while on vacation. I love them. (1.5 carat/matching band). I love them. I wear them everyday, with the exception of house/yark work. They have not lost there gloss nor scratched up in any way. I only use warm water to clean them with. Our local Charm Diamond Center Jewelry Store, could not tell the difference. I was in the store looking for a daughters pride ring, when she asked if she could do a complimentary cleaning off my rings, she commented on them, I didn't not tell her the difference. You will not be dis-appointed, they are nothing like cubic z's, they yellow over time. Mine are over 3 yrs, and just like the day I bought them. Pic attached.

We decided to go with Moissanite after researching alternate stones. I have a much greater need for retirement savings, air conditioning and etc than for diamonds. I didn't want a soft gemstone because I'm klutzy and damaged previous rings. I also lost three sets, one went down a cable shaft, one fell out of my pocket while setting up a ground grid and the last set I suspect my son pawned while I was down sick with the flu. Needless to say we needed something not as expensive (in case I lose or damage it) but something sturdy: Moissanite fit my needs.

We had my ring custom made after researching local jewelers. All they do is custom work and repair, so no showroom, I had to just 'imagine' how it would look. I am blown away at how beautiful my ring is now that I have it. We are both delighted with how it turned out and will go back for our wedding bands, which will also have Moissanite in them too.

Did any of you purchase a loose moissanite stone? If so, what retailer did you use and were you happy with the purchase and service?

I'm a little late to the game, but I ordered my ring from Moissanite.com and I had a great experience working with them.

We looked at MoissaniteCo and Moissanite.com when we were shopping for the ring, and Moissanite.com seemed to be a higher quality. And since they're owned by the company that creates the moissanite, we were sold. The ring came on time, looked exactly as promised, and the customer service people were so helpful when I cracked a side stone a few months ago.

My ring is absolutely stunning (ok - I'm biased...) - I am so glad we picked moissanite.

I have a moissanite and I love it. I also was very nervous about it. They are so beautiful and you can hardly tell a difference. I actually have a moissanite engagement ring and diamond wedding band, and you cannot tell. Check out pictures at my blog: www.offthebandwagonbride.com!

I can’t say enough amazing things about Moissanite. The only thing that might make it seem suspicious is that it’s better than any diamond most people could afford (this is a 2 carat weight equivalent, colorless, flawless, Charles and Colvard ForeverOne hearts and arrows Moissanite, and my jeweler said an equivalent diamond would be around $25k). We ordered the stone online and had it sent directly to the jeweler to our in this custom setting. I’m personally proud if it and feel like the smartest girl in the room, knowing my stone was $900 vs $9000 for what would’ve been a pretty crummy 2 carat diamond. Most people I know are familiar with my views on diamonds, so they know it’s moissanite (and wish they’d known about it when they got their rings). For other people, I sometimes tell them and sometimes I just take the complements and move on. I couldn’t be happier with this! The camera doesn’t capture the sparkle. It’s unreal. I still just stare at it, shocked that it’s really mine!

I have moissanite and I looooove it. So happy with it. We got the main oval gem from moissaniteco. It's actually the Moissanite Co brand one. I was skeptical before we bought it. If you research heavily you already know about Charles and Colvard and the patent deal. Moissanite co is made in China, I believe, and since it was much cheaper than even the C&C ones I was nervous. But rest assured it is stunning. The jeweler we took it to was even impressed. The setting is custom and the jeweler actually got C&C brand for the smaller marquise stones and you cannot tell the difference at all.

As for non-jeweler friends and family, no one has been able to tell it's not diamond. I am not ashamed whatsoever that it isn't diamond. It makes me uncomfortable to have people thinking my fiance would spend so much on a ring so I tell everyone it is moissanite and they are always so impressed.
