Moissanite or Diamond

K.M., on August 15, 2016 at 2:55 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 27

My partner and I keep going back and forth about the ring. I understand spending a lot on a diamond if that really means something to you, but I'm not sure if I really care that much about having a diamond. We are a few years out of college and have loans to pay off and I feel like spending a lot on a ring is just not in our best interest. I recently looked into Moissanites for the center stone and wanted to here from the other girls that chose to go this route, how you decided and can you actually tell that it is different from a diamond (not that that matters all that much). Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated. I'm just starting to think this is the better option for us.

Also, the band we decided on is gold with emerald leafs around the top of the band.

Hi K.M.! I have a Moissanite center stone and I love it! For a number of reasons (primarily financial and environmental impact) I decided I didn't want a diamond. I can tell a small difference between my ring and a natural diamond - a Moissanite has light dispersion that a diamond doesn't. I don't know if others can tell and I don't really care. I'm very open about not having a diamond and feel good about the choice we made! That's how my ring looks inside at my office.

I have a 2ct forever one moisannite. It's really clear in clarity and has absolutely no color. Most people can't tell, but since it's so flawless you can see the differences when it's next to a real diamond. We chose a moisannite because I wanted to be able to wear it daily without worrying about damaging or losing it. I am a nurse and run the risk of losing my ring and stone in my gloves. It can easily be replaced at the price we bought it for. Cost was the major reason we purchased this stone because I wanted a larger stone for a solitaire without compromising in our world travels. I hope this helps. In the end it's your decision. I am 100% in love with mine

I think it depends on which stone you like the looks of. I have nothing against moissy but I'm interested in the environmental impact of making them vs ethically mined diamonds.

Diamonds are a scam. They're worthless and originally weren't the quintessential engagement ring stone until the diamond industry told you they were. (Same way white was not the traditional wedding gown color until some queen wore it.) Get whatever you like. If it's a white rock that's a diamond, or a white rock that isn't, or a colored gem. Whatever!

@Sandra, I agree. I've got a black onyx as my main stone and when people say "oh black diamond?" I always correct them.

This is my moissanite (center stone) ring and I wouldn't change a thing.

    I have a diamond. It's a 0.7 carot from James Allen.

I *love* my stone. FH asked several years ago if I wanted something now "but not a diamond" or if I preferred waiting a little longer for something nicer. I told him I wanted to wait. (This is exactly the same mentality for our wedding plans btw....)

I am so glad I did!! It really is gorgeous, has a lot of fire (rainbow light glittering off the stone), and something I only appreciated after the fact - it's real. I get that Moissanite is real but deep down, I would always be bothered I didn't have a diamond. Maybe you're different but this would drive me up the wall. And I can honestly say that I will wear it the rest of my days or pass it down to a daughter or granddaughter.

Choice is yours but to me diamond > non diamond.

Punkin I am in love with the detailing on your band. Do you know where the ring came from?

Eta, sorry photo is hella-blurry. Get what you want! Diamonds are intrinsically worthless so I don't get the hype, but I don't care what anyone else wears on their finger. I got a morganite ring that I love and I'd much rather take the money saved on it and spend it on a trip to Ireland next fall Smiley smile

I love my moissanite for everything that makes it a moissanite. I love the how moody it is sometimes, I love the fire, the rainbows, everything. I am not trying to pass my ring off as a diamond because I think it is even prettier than a diamond. All the money in the world and I would pick this ring a million times over.

Yes investigate other stones too. Tourmalines are gorgeous. Sapphires come in an amazing array of colours. Spinel as well. Morganite is a beautiful peach/pink. You just need to think about durability when choosing an alternate stone. I love diamonds for their variety of cuts and durability though.

I wanted a diamond. Similar to @Punkin, FH told me it would be a little bit before he could afford the one I wanted (size-wise). I said idc. I waited. He eventually got it for me. It's just up to personal preference.

I don't have a moissanite stone but I love them and did a lot of research on them.

    1) They don't scratch as easily as other diamond alternatives. They hold up just as well as a diamond. I feel like this is their most important quality.

    2) They shine just as bright, if not brighter than a diamond and are completely colorless.

    3) They are made to look like a flawless diamond...can't say no to that.

    4) Man-made, so you won't have to worry about blood-diamonds.

Ultimately FH got a diamond, but I still LOVE moissanite.

I have a morganite and I absolutely love it! I decided about a year ago that I wanted a diamond alternative and 5 months with it on, I'm so happy w my choice (financial and environmental)! Sometimes it's more clear, sometimes more pink. Morganite varies in color by stone and by day. Whatever makes you and your lover happy!

They are also starting to have lab created diamonds in jewelry sizes as well, not just for industrial use. I think Diamond Nexus is a place that sells them. The way light behaves with Moissanite is a little different whereas lab created diamond is still pure carbon lattice and will refract the same as mined diamond. All the other gemstone options are good ideas too. I personally have a diamond because I like having something colorless so I won't ever feel like it clashes with my clothes and I love the little rainbows it makes.

Thank you everyone for all of your comments. I think moissanite is the stone for me, personally. After reading through your comments and doing some other research, I just can't say no to less environmental impact.

All of your rings are gorgeous by the way!

I fell in love with Moissanite years ago when I walked past a jewelry case filled with what I thought were the really expensive diamond engagement rings (bigger stones with incredible sparkle). It would be my first choice, hands down.
