moh wants me to find her a makeup artist

lalalulu, on October 27, 2019 at 5:38 PM Posted in Planning 0 11

A few months ago I booked an amazing makeup artist and hairstylist who is on the pricier side but I think she's worth it because she specializes in Asian makeup (I'm Asian) and I love her work. I’m not requiring my bridesmaids to get their hair/makeup done professionally so when I booked her I sent them her price list ($60-$120 for hair and $100 for makeup) and said that those were the prices if they were interested. Two of my bridesmaids said that they’ll pass but my MOH said that it’s on the pricier side and she’ll have to think about it. Today my MOH asked me if it’s possible to find someone who would do both hair and makeup for $100. She said that she’s trying to find options but no one has prices listed online and she doesn’t want to call every one of them to check prices. She asked me to find one for her because she prefers to get makeup/hair done professionally but at a reasonable budget. As a side note, she’s doing very well financially (she told me this a few weeks ago when we were talking about something else unrelated) she just doesn't want to spend over $100 for hair/makeup. I understand that it's pricey, which is why I made it completely optional for my bridesmaids. I'm helping to pay for their dress alterations and will be opting for a low-key night out for my bachelorette to keep costs low for them.

Right now I just don’t have the time or energy to go calling makeup artists and hairstylist for my MOH. I don’t even know if wedding makeup artists do makeup for just bridesmaids or if my makeup artist will allow a second vendor without an extra fee. I'm thinking about just paying for either hair or makeup for all my bridesmaids at this point to avoid drama with my MOH but it's not really in my budget since I'm already planning to buy them something around that amount for their bridesmaid gifts. Any advice as to what I should do here? Would it be tacky to gift them the professional hair/makeup as their bridesmaid gifts?

I would just politely tell her as much as you would love to find someone for her, you have other matters that need your attention.
It shouldn't take long for her to make a few calls or shoot off some emails!

I will tell you that I picked the second cheapest hair and makeup person I could find, but I just happened to like her the best out of all of the ones I reached out to. For bridesmaids, hair was $75 and makeup was $85 and an additional $15 for fake eyelashes. My mother-in-law complained to my sister-in-law who was a bridesmaid because she thought it was way too expensive, but she was used to getting her hair down at Walmart and she never wears makeup. My sister-in-law, who has been a bridesmaid 10+ times and used to work in the wedding industry, told my mother-in-law that my pricing was actually very good compared to other weddings she has been. She decided to have her sister do her makeup and had her hair done at Walmart. I can also tell you for hair and makeup for my brother's wedding we spent over $100 and the wedding was in a very small town where everything is like half the price compared to everywhere else. Hair and makeup artists for weddings are pricey and I think the pricing you listed out is pretty standard. I also think you are going to run into a problem with your stylist if you hire another one because you probably are required to use only her services for your wedding. If you MOH wants to use someone else, then I would say she needs to locate that person herself. She will probably also need to have the services done somewhere else in order to avoid problems with your stylist.

You definitely don't have to find her a HMUA. Like PP suggested, kindly tell her you have other things to focus on right now, and maybe tell her the website you used to pick a HMUA so she can have a good starting off point. After that, you're off the hook.

You should also check with your HMUA about your MOH using someone else. The HMUA I’m using has it in her contract she’s she only one who can be used that day to avoid it being too busy etc. so before your MOH even looks for someone else make sure it won’t be a problem for the HMUA you’re using!

Will your artist be traveling to do your hair & makeup onsite somewhere?

I would check your HMUA contract. My makeup artist has an exclusivity line, and it's a $500 fee for 'forced collaboration.'

As previously mentioned, it is not your responsibility to find a MUA for your MOH. You offered an option that she chose not to go with, so she should be able to do the research to find someone she likes that's within her budget, and that she can get done at a different location (if needed).

My makeup is going to be like $300, and my hair will be $150 (both include trials). Bridesmaid makeup will be $85 each, hair will be $75 each.

If you *do* want to gift hair and/or makeup, though, that's not tacky at all! Many people do that. Smiley smile I'm doing the same thing as you -- having hair/makeup be optional. I plan on doing other gifts.

It's not up to you to do that for her. You gave her the name of who you are using. If she can't afford it then she can find one on her own.

This is not your problem. She’s an adult she can decide if she wants HMU that day.

This is definitely not your responsibility. She is an adult and call and get prices and book and her own vendor herself. Also, you are already being generous in paying for alterations, you do NOT need to pay for HAMU if it is not in your budget! Let you MOH know that unless she wants to pay for the vendor you have booked herself, she needs to find someone on her own! Good luck! Smiley smile

$100 seems pretty low for hair & makeup. I've been a bridesmaid twice, both times it cost $150 for both and I paid for my bridesmaids HAMU and it cost me $140 for both for each girl. Your HAMU artist might also not want to work side by side with another if she doesn't know her. I'd tell your MOH she is welcome to use sephora or ulta or local beauty schools or look for her own HAMU artist.

I looked high and low for a reasonable HAMU artist and there just don't seem to be any near me. There was a "cheaper" one that did both for $165 but the website was poorly put together and nothing in their portfolio seemed like anything so elaborate that I couldn't do it myself. I found a salon that does amazing work for $200. This is the cost for airbrush and styled hair. I'm not making it a requirement because they're paying for their own but I also decided not to go with the cheaper one because the person I choose to use for them will also be doing mine and it's my day. I want to feel beautiful and love my photos. If they want to do one or the other or go somewhere else entirely, that's completely fine.

It is NOT your responsibility to find a cheaper HMUA for your MOH. She's a grown up, she can make her own calls/emails, whatever.

You found someone for yourself, and offered the services to your bridal party. That is normal, that is proper. If you could afford to pay for everyone, I'm sure you would.

First, your MOH is not required to get pro makeup done. If she wants to do that, then she can pay for it. If she doesn't want to pay for the person you found, she can find her own person. DO NOT let her guilt you over this!!!
