Modifying Straps of Dress Poll

Helen, on September 6, 2021 at 8:47 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 18
So I’ve posted another discussion about altering the bust of my dress, but I’m back with another question.

So my dress is the Willowby Maudie gown, and it can be worn two ways: with the straps up or off the shoulder. Modifying Straps of Dress Poll 1Modifying Straps of Dress Poll 2

When I first saw it on Instagram I saved it and it was shown straps up. When I saw it on Pinterest it was straps off the shoulder and I didn’t particularly like it. I do like the off the shoulder look, but I don’t love the tulle straps off the shoulder because they’re thinner and I prefer a thicker one for off shoulder.
So I originally thought about modifying the straps to be thicker like this other dress I had tried Modifying Straps of Dress Poll 3

I ordered appliqués from the designer to match the ones on the dress. And my plan was the wear it straps down from the ceremony and then pull them up for the reception.
But now I’m kind of leaning toward wearing the straps up for the whole wedding, and with the straps up I prefer them the way they already are and I worry if I change them to look better off the shoulder it’ll ruin how they look pulled up.
So here’s what I’m asking. Should I keep them as is and wear them up the entire time? Or change them to look like the other dress and wear them down for the ceremony and up for the reception, but risk not liking them as much when they’re pulled up.

Your dress is beautiful!! I prefer it with the straps up, so I'd recommend leaving them as is and wearing them that way 🙂

I like it both ways too. I think it depends - it looks a lot more timeless with the straps up, and while all dresses date eventually, I think the straps down like that is going to date a lot more precisely to now, and much more quickly than if you have the straps up. Also, even though it looks pretty that way, I think I'd find the straps down like that would drive me absolutely mental, but none of these things might bother you at all, so take what I'm saying with a pinch of salt!

That’s a good point about dating the dress. The off the shoulder look is really in right now. I think I was into it being off shoulder because I tried on three different off shoulder dresses and all of them got ooohs and ahhhs and I do think it is a really romantic look.

I just had this huge like buyers remorse after buying my dress because I wanted something more boho and I was worried my dress looked too princessy which is not me at all. So I think even though everyone loves the romantic off shoulder I think straps up is more boho and more me.
But I’m also super indecisive! haha

Thank you! I really do love it.

I’m just so indecisive because I went into it wanting sleeves or something more boho and I feel off the shoulder looks too romantic and princess-like for me. It’s hard because I do like the off shoulder look, but not with the current straps.

I'm generally not a fan of straps, but yours just "finish" the dress. I would leave them the way they are and wear them up.

Personally, I think straps up is more formal and fitting for the ceremony. Straps down is fun and an informal look for the reception.

Can you do more of a cap sleeve? Happy medium between sleeves up and down. Love that lace sleeve!

I like straps down, and I don't think you need to change them! But do whatever makes you feel most comfortable Smiley smile

Is your seamstress able to make the current straps detachable, and custom make the other ones, also detachable? That way you can have the best of both worlds and just swap the off shoulder to the straps you like? I tried on a dress that had two different styles of straps like that and it was almost my winner just because it made it feel like two different dresses.

That’s an interesting idea! I think it’s possible because one of the dresses I tried that was similar was detachable using buttons.

I really like the look of the straps up!! 😍

You could also sneak them off the shoulder for some of your couples portraits so you have pictures both ways! 📷

Thank you everyone for your input! I think I’ve decided to keep the straps as is and not add the appliqués. Maybe I can put them on a veil or something.

As to wearing them down during the ceremony and pulling them up later, I’m gonna leave that decision for the day of because I’m too indecisive.
