Modifying planner contract?

Leonormorrow, on December 17, 2019 at 6:36 PM Posted in Planning 0 4

I hired a partial planner and day of coordinator a few months ago for my September 2020 wedding. We have met once to get on the same page. I initially said I needed help with a few vendors (maybe around 5), but in the past weeks I've found 3 of the ones I thought I would need help with.

Is it acceptable to reach out or ask the planner at our next meeting if she would lower the contract fee since she is no longer going to have to do as much work? Any tips on how to ask? I mentioned that I was finding more vendors and she said she would still "coordinate and plan them," but there isn't anything else to plan?

The contract says I can't cancel but doesn't say anything about modifications. I think the total change if any would be saving a few hundred dollars, nothing major, but still significant. Thanks!

You can’t modify a contract once you sign it. Every planner contract I’ve ever seen says something generic about helping to find vendors, it doesn’t specify how many or charge more or less depending on the number of vendors. I suppose you could try, but I don’t see it ending in your favor.

    Hey there!

Unfortunately, Caytlyn is correct and once the contract is signed there is no wriggle room. You both signed the contract knowing the terms and were happy with the deal that you arrived at.

Of course, you could discuss this with your planner, but she is under no obligation to change the contract and you may have to pay her for the previously agreed services.

I agree with everyone else, once you sign the contract you can't go back in and change it. Also just a tidbit, even though there is "less work" for her to do now in regards to finding vendors, if she is still your day of coordinator, the work load on that day will be the same (coordinating the vendors, setting up, making sure everyone is in the right place, etc).

So even though she's doing "less work" on the front side, there's a LOT of behind the scenes work she still needs to do in order to help your wedding day go as smoothly as possible, so I don't see any costs getting lowered.
