mob attire advice?

Kate, on February 24, 2020 at 12:56 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10

My mom is sooo super casual and does not want to wear a MOB gown but wants to dress the part of the MOB. I suggested maybe wearing a more causal dress and add the same belt I will wear with my gown. I thought it would be cute & something special we could share on the big day. She loves the idea but but wants to try more dresses on.

We are considering going to Nordstroms, that way a stylist can help her pick some dresses out. We tried David's Bridal and she wasn't happy with anything. Does anyone have suggestions on where we can go for more dresses?

Thanks Ladies!

Would she be more comfortable in a suit or a jumpsuit? Azazie also has great MOB options.

My mom flat out refused to wear a dress and threw a mini tantrum when I told her it wasn’t ok to wear leggings, a t-shirt and tennis shoes. We compromised and she ended up picking out a pantsuit from David’s Bridal.

Oh jeeze. A Pantsuit is not a bad idea though, thank you for the suggestion!

My mom wasn’t a fan of the “mother of the bride” dresses either. She is relatively young (57) and she felt all the MOB dresses either made her look like “a frumpy old lady” or like “an old lady trying to look young” 😂 there really wasn’t much we found that looked right for a middle-aged mom. She just got her dress at lord & Taylor! She was actually looking for a dress for another occasion and then just stumbled upon this and fell in love with it.

I have this same issue with my mom. She hates dresses and absolutely refuses to wear any of the dresses labeled MOB because they are too sparkly and frilly or makes her look like an old lady. We are just hitting up department stores to find her a simple dress that she likes.

Love your momma! My mom and FMIL are the same way.

My mom honestly got a simple jersey/crepe Calvin Klein dress to wear to my wedding. It's more of a work wear dress than a MOB gown (tulip sleeves, sheath silhouette, hits just below her knee), but she didn't want something glitzy and it felt ridiculous to put her in an expensive dress that she felt uncomfortable in and would never wear again. We went to Burlington Coat Factory, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Nordstrom, Nordstrom Rack, Lord and Taylor, Saks Five Avenue Outlet, Lane Bryant, and David's Bridal and ended up buying the $40 dress at Burlington! David's was actually the worst spot because everything they had was heavily embellished and over the top, and expensive for what it was. Most of the color options were also really unflattering on her too. I didn't want to put my mom in anything too matronly or excessive or that didn't feel like "her" and she's happy with the dress we picked out and I know she can wear it again for other weddings or special events and feel like she looks good and is comfortable and also appropriately dressed.
