M&M favors melting?

Katie, on May 21, 2017 at 11:06 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 9

So I purchased a Groupon to get personalized M&Ms for our wedding favors, but I'm worried about how early I should order them and whether they'll melt before the wedding. I'm not concerned about the day of - I'm concerned about storing them for weeks before the wedding. I live in an apartment without air conditioning and it can get very hot. We have A/C in the living room only but we don't run it 24/7 because it's too expensive.

I've read not to put M&Ms in the fridge because the condensation will make the colors run. Should we just keep them in a dark closet or something hoping they stay cool enough and fill the favor boxes the weekend of the wedding? Will that be cool enough?

Do you have a friend or family member who can store them? id hate for you to either have them ruined or not show up in time.

I've been storing mine on a shelf in the back of a closet for the last 3mo and they are petfectly fine. When I spoke with their customer service, I was told they have a 12mo shelf life if unopened

My favors are also chocolate, I ordered them in January but asked them not to be shipped until may. They got here yesterday. They do say not to put them in the refrigerator or freezer because they'll bloom (white spots) but to store them at room temperature. I'm just leaving them in the box, and refreezing the gel pouches they came with in the box, for transport to the wedding (2 hours away)

If give them to someone to hold onto them. It's pushing 90 some days where I live and if the air is off, my apartment can reach 80. They'll definitely start to melt at that temperature, even if it's dark.

Do you have a friend with ac or a cool basement? unless your closets are noticeably cooler than the rest of your apartment I wouldn't trust them in there.

Will freezing effect them? Try it with regular ones first

If you freeze them, they'll get wet with condensation when they're thawing and get sticky. That'll also cause the color to transfer if they're handled while they're thawing.

This is coming from someone who loves frozen M&Ms.

Does someone have a basement you can store them in? I agree with seeing if someone else can store them.
