Mixing White Gold and Silver on Engagement Ring

dylanabrams92, on October 18, 2017 at 1:30 PM Posted in Planning 0 10

Hello!

Prospective groom here, currently looking for a ring. I'm thinking of buying through Gemvara (custom ring design) and the one I want is white gold and just a little bit out of my price range. I can take the price down almost $150 if I keep the white gold band but do a Sterling Silver setting for the stone. But I've also read that care for silver and gold is different.

Has anyone mixed metals for their engagement ring, and if so, what is the challenge when it comes to cleaning, care, etc.? Or, since the setting is smaller compared to the actual band, does it not actually matter?

I know that care for gold and silver is a bit different, but having insurance on it or whatever, you can always send it to be cleaned professionally. Also, getting an organic at home cleaner is good also. I think it'll be fine!! Congratulations and good luck ring shopping!!

I'd keep saving until you have that extra $150.

I am thinking about getting my band in rose gold when my engagement ring is white gold...

just be careful with them tarnishing and keep them cleaned! Smiley smile

I agree with Olivia, spend the extra and keep it all gold.

Do the white gold. I wouldn't be worried about the silver due to tarnishing since the whole thing will be in rhodium but silver is weaker than gold and you do not want sterling prongs holding something valuable. I used to work in a jewelry store that specialized in sterling jewelry. Does Gemvara work in palladium? Usually you can get palladium for less than gold and you don't have to get the rhodium redone since it's naturally white like platinum, it's just not as easy to work on if you need it sized or anything.

Thanks for the advice! Gemvara does work in Palladium and it makes for a decent-sized discount! What is the general consensus on Palladium v. white gold?

Echoing everyone saying go with the gold. My sterling silver "placeholder" ring gets so tarnished.

ETA: also to confirm what @EML said about it being weaker. I've lost a few stones on my ring too

Palladium patinas over time. It will turn and stay a different color than the WG.

It will be obvious there is a different metal in the ring. Also palladium has to be treated differently than WG. You can wear WG while cleaning and you can technically wear it while swimming (but don't!). Whereas palladium will absolutely deteriorate in a pool and easily corrodes when placed in contact with cleaning materials.

Silver tarnishes. It will look pretty crappy to have some of the ring tarnished and the other part shiny. That would be a real pain to have to constantly clean it. Save until you have that $150.

True, palladium will develop a patina just like platinum. These metals scratch more easily than gold so they look darker and aren't as shiny where the rhodium plating on white gold you get redone every six months or so will keep it looking shiny. However, you can get your rings buffed which should make them shiny again if your jeweler knows what they're doing. My e-ring, bands, and FH's ring are all palladium. I knew I couldn't wear white gold because I'm allergic to the nickle.
