Mismatched Bridesmaid Dresses

Brittany, on August 13, 2019 at 1:33 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 14

I know there are about 100,000,000 blogs and articles about this topic, but nothing actually answers my questions specifically. I was in a wedding and we did this and the bride just told us "dark navy, short". She didn't care about fabric, store, brand, or anything else!! For her, and a lot of brides, it actually turned out FABULOUS.

My dilemma: I am doing a shade of red. I ordered swatches in the specific color I was thinking (burgundy) and I got three totally different reds. I'm talking like one was a really deep, almost purple, wine red, one cherry red, and one deep red. So, I chose which of those I liked the most and went with that store. I told the girls to go to the site (JJsHouse), filter to knee-length, burgundy, chiffon and pick a dress! ........... Well, two of them asked if I would just choose for them, one asked me to give her some of my fave options, and now the ones I'm finding don't really coordinate with the one girl that did choose!

I'm not a picky bride at all, but I do want them to like their dress and be comfortable in it and I do want it to flow well. Does it make sense for me just to pick their dresses for them within their budget and comfort realm? Smiley atonished Any advice is helpful!! Has anyone done this before? What did you do/are you doing for your bridesmaids?

Bonus Question: Are you putting your MOH in a little bit different of a dress (different length, style, color, embellishment, etc.)??

I am letting my bridesmaids choose what style dress. I decided to use Azazie and my criteria for the girls was: Dark Green, Long, No Lace.

All the girls picked their own dress depending on their body type/style and price point. I didn't have any problems with they not wanting to choose a dress or difficulty coordinating the dresses (as they all chose dresses that were different, yet complimented each other).

I have two girls and that's it. I went with a color on Azazie and picked out some dresses that I liked. I told them the color and length and told them they could either pick out the same dress or different and could pick one of the ones I liked or pick a different one. I am not being too picky but I deff. get them not going well together. I feel like I will be too busy with other things to care if they go together or not. I mean they will be the same length and color so that's all I can ask for. Unless they get the same dress I feel like I will find something that doesn't fit well with the other dress. I am not planning on having by MOH stand out, unless her and the other girl get different dresses then that's how she will stand out.

My girls all got their dresses from David’s Bridal but the dress I chose has options for different types of straps or no straps at all so they will all look a little different. I’m debating getting a belt or something a little different for my MOH just so she stands out, and possibly making a different bouquet for her to hold. I think when the dresses all look a little different it looks really nice, whether they are different shades and dresses or the same shade and different dresses!

See that is what I was hoping for, but it didn't work out. I'm not sure if I should talk with them again or what. I did look at Azazie too. I thought they had awesome dresses!!

I don't see why they can't pick out styles of dresses themselves. My girls did this and I already had a color in mind. I told them to pick their favorites to try on and then they decided from there. I would presume it should be even easier if yours can pick whatever style they want and they all don't have to decide on one! It's like picking out a dress for any occasion, just pick a style that suits you! Tell them they know themselves best to decide on what styles make them most comfortable. Idk why they can't pick that would annoy me.

Mine all got different dresses at Azazie. I told them a color and length, and otherwise let them pick whatever. My MOH made a group and added a dozen or so dresses that she liked and/or thought would suit most people. Some chose from what she picked and some picked themselves. There was a moment where it looked like everyone (including me) but the MOH would be wearing sleeveless dresses except for one who was considering a long-sleeved one. That might have looked a little strange, but she ended up choosing a cap-sleeved dress that looks great and makes her stand out just a little.

If you're worried about them accidentally picking a different shade of red then maybe just make sure they all use the same site, and maybe have them run it by you before they order it just so you can double check it?

I told my girls to get any long, burgundy dress they wanted, any fabric, any store. Initially, they had to confirm what shade of burgundy because as you noticed, they range in color. But once they understood the shade of burgundy I wanted they had no problem getting dresses from different stores with the same burgundy color.

I'm letting my girls pick their dresses from a specific color at Azazie, but I'm planning on giving them 5 options or so that I like that they can either pick from or use for inspiration. I'm not picky, but I want them to look cohesive, so I think that is a good in between. I'll also have them show me which dresses they are interested in before they buy.

MOH picked out her dress when I got mine. I told her the color and she happily hit the clearance rack. Almost 18 months later, my BM finally picked one out online. All I told her was color and preferred (but not required) length. I haven’t seen hers yet but I’m sure she picked something perfectly fine.

Right! I loved being able to pick out mine. I do wish she had us go to a specific site, but it worked out great!

I like this suggestion, giving them 5 options to go with and double checking. I was nervous because some styles look similar too, so it would look like an attempt at matching which is just tacky. Thanks for the suggestion!
