Mismatch Plates

"Trashy" would never enter my mind on this. I think it can be beautiful, especially at a wedding with other vintage-type elements. I do think it's a fair amount of work to plan, collect, store, etc. all the dinnerware, so if you're considering doing it yourself, I'd be realistic about the work involved. There are some caterers who offer this as an option.

Personally, it's not for me. I wouldn't say trashy, but I would say it looks kind of cheap or like you ran out of plates so you just picked random plates.

Nope, it looks classy not trashy! 👍 The key is to unify other elements like using the same flowers in centerpieces, same candles, etc, so it looks intentional and not haphazard.

I definitely don't think it looks trashy, and I only think it looks like it wasn't put together if they're very different sizes or if a majority of them are the same and then you have other random ones. I think it runs the risk of looking cluttered if you also use mismatched silverware, glassware, napkins, etc. But if you keep the other things consistent you should be fine. Also, if you're worried about it looking messy (or if you want to have an additional category of mismatched items) you can try to find items that have a similar element, like a color that's on all of them, or a pattern that's in the same place on each one even if the actual patterns are different.

I think it would look great! A friend of a friend had a wedding last year and the bride was determined to use mismatched chinaware. It looked fantastic. If this reflects you as a person, it makes it all the better and your guest will see that!
