Since these are your invitations, the 6-10 week window is appropriate. (Despite what some on this site will argue, sending them out earlier does NOT mean people will respond earlier and let you firm up all your plans, so stick with the timeline -- it's based on good results!) If you want to give guests an earlier "heads up" about your date, that would be a save-the-date, usually sent 6-8 months before the wedding (sometimes up to a year if it's truly a destination wedding). STDs are completely optional, but helpful if you know a number of guests will need to plan for travel, time off, etc. (or you are just really excited and want to get the word out! ). However, every guest who receives an STD will need to receive an invitation, so it's good practice to only send them to VIPs and out-of-area guests you are certain you will invite. It will be super awkward if you later want/need to cut people who received an STD. Good luck!
