Mineral Makeup

pianoNYK, on March 1, 2009 at 10:27 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 17

So pretty much everyone says don't go with mineral makeup or anything with sunscreen in it on your wedding day, since it will reflect the light and fade your face. That said, all the comments I've seen from people who HAVE used it say that they looked fine, at least with BareEscentuals. Those of you who have had your wedding / e-photos done already, and especially those who have used mineral foundation, what has been your experience? Any makeup advice what type of makeup to use for our wedding day?

I am probably one of the ones who mentioned bare escentuals, I haven't had my wedding photos taken yet (I will be taking engagement pics with that makeup though within the month and I can give you an update then), but I have taken lots of normal photos with/without flash using bare escentuals mineral makeup and they all came out great.

Mineral makeup will do nicely for your wedding day. I was introduced to it by Mary Kay Cosmetics and I've been using it for over a year now and no problems. Have you noticed that some makeup leaves you with a shine or greasy look? That used to happen to me alot. Since I've been using the Mary Kay mineral make up I get nothing but compliments. Check it out.

David at DNI in Charlestown can custom blend mineral makeup for you! Why risk buying the wrong color when you can have an expert do it perfectly?

If youre going to spend all that money on new make up, why not get it done professionally? Find a make up artist that airbrushes......it looks flawless and lasts forever. Here in NJ they charge 80-120 for a bride. Also, I used to use bare essentials and I found that it rubbed off on clothing very easily - not cool when youre wearing all white. Airbrushing won't budge. And another plus...it fills in EVERY little line or wrinkle Smiley smile

I think it has to do with the formulation of the mineral makeup. I have extremely sensitive skin and basically can only use mineral makeup. From what I understand, the ingredient titanium dioxide is what reflects the light, and if there is too much of it, it causes you to look pale in photos, but not in person. I wore Mineralogie brand mineral makeup for my first wedding ceremony (I had two ceremonies/receptions, one for each side of the family, a couple of months apart) and I do look washed out in some of my photos. I went to a different makeup artist for my second ceremony. She also used mineral makeup, but a different brand, and my skin color came out fine in all the photos. My suggestion is that when you do your makeup trial, take a few photos of yourself in the sun and then inside with a flash to see if light reflection is a problem.

Thanks! I think you're right about the different types of mineral makeup -- I spent hours looking this up online while waiting for responses here today! Here's some info about different types of minerals, in case anyone else is interested:

    1. Mica - Mica is found in just about all mineral cosmetics. Even though mineral makeup is fine powder, it still needs to adhere to your face instead of your clothes when you are applying it. That's where mica comes in. the properties of this mineral aid in the adherence of the makeup as well as reflecting light to reduce large pores, fine lines and wrinkles. Serecite mica is the type of this mineral most commonly used.

    2. Titanium Dioxide - Do you have skin imperfections that you want to hide? You'll be glad that your mineral cosmetics contain titanium dioxide. This mineral provides a natural matte finish to your skin and also brighteners to simulate the natural glow of healthy skin. As with mica, titanium dioxide reflects light to conceal large p

Pores and fine lines. You will gain sun protection with this mineral that is also found in commercial sunscreen products. For extra coverage, apply sunscreen to your skin before your makeup.

    3. Zinc Oxide - This is the mineral that makes up the warrior stripes on the faces of surfers and other beach goers in the summer time. Zinc oxide stays on even when it gets wet to continue to protect your skin. The mineral zinc is also found in homeopathic medicines and is a natural healing agent for the body.

    4. Iron Oxide - There's nothing wrong with a splash of color to make a women noticeable in a crowd. Iron oxides add color to mineral makeup naturally. The pigments come in several shades useful for eye shadows and blushes. More subtle pigments are used to match foundations to all skin tones.

    5. Silica - For a soft silky appearance and feel to the skin, be sure that silica is an ingredient in your mineral makeup. Any excess oil in your skin is absorbed by this mineral. Extra oil causes makeup to cake and look artificial.

    6. Boron nitride - Like silica, boron nitride absorbs excess oil so your face won't shine like you've been sweating. Instead, your skin will glow.

To be natural, mineral makeup must contain natural ingredients like the minerals named above. Other products like kaolin clay or rice powder are added also. Whether you choose to use these ingredients is up to you.

You know your skin better than anyone. Do what is right for you and your skin health.

Please do not use mineral makeup on your wedding day unless you have no other option. It just doen't wear well enough and photograph well. Your photographer is going to have to photoshop the pictures to eliminate the shiny spots mineral makeup causes so that you look your best, but the pictures taken with friends' and family's cameras will look washed out and shiny. If you hate the feel of makeup, go with a previous poster's advice and find someone in your area that does airbrushing. It's so lightweight you don't even feel it. Plus, it's a pretty relaxing way to get your makeup done.

I have used it (physicians formula at macys) and had it professionally dont. it has done wonders for me. (the powder but cant use the eye shadow bc it bothers my eyes and also love there blush). i think i MIGHT get it proffsionally done if my makeup lady emails me back. (i hope so). but ya i agree with the one poster. if you arent going to continue using the new makeup after the wedding then ya id pay the money to get it proffesionally done. (i didnt get my wedding pix yet. will be in 1 month and 23 days).

I use mineral make up all the time but I did wear it to a wedding in Jan. and every pic with me in it I look soooooo shiny. We had a family photo done and I hate it I look like I could fry an egg on my face. but in person I dont look oily I hate that pic. No way would I chance that look on my wedding day. Air brushing sounds good but I read on here somewhere that the girl broke out from it. Who wants to be broke out for their honeymoon.I figured have a pro do full coverage, matte finish makeup and be done with it.

Well said about the mineral makeup, minerals clearly have a profound and significant role in

maintaining our health. By doing the mineral make-up we look pretty good at the occasions. It's doesn't have any side affects. One can prefer mineral make-up!!

Hi! I am personally not convinced that mineral makeup has the staying power for a wedding day. I think it is fine for every day use, but you can't do your wedding over. If this is the way you want to go, test it out for an evening and take pictures throughout the night. See if you like how you look for the duration of the event.

Okay, so I hope there's not an uproar/backlash to what I'm going to post because I don't mean it negatively:

Per a customer's request, I offer touch-up services. Nothing major so that the person isn't recognizable, just simple touch ups that don't affect what the person looks like in real life but that instead eliminate/alter the effects of things like sunscreen+sunlight=shiny face as you mentioned. Again, I don't do it extensively because it's important for the photos that capture the wedding moments, to be genuine, but some minor adjustments don't hurt.

In short, things are bound to happen, light is bound to shine a certain way, so hire a good photographer with multiple skill sets. Smiley smile

    - it is very much true that bare minerals do not suits photograph. Before my marriage I go through a wedding magazine which was revealing the fact that SPF in the powder is very reflective and makes your skin look really pale when the flash hits the sensitive skin of your face.

During my wedding day I used foundation bought from http://www.micabella.co.uk/ as mentioned in that magazine, as good foundation enables you to hide blemish for the perfect photo. Stick concealer are considered best with the use of sponge.

I am really very thankful to the magazine.
