Military id vs name change timing?

Mrs. S, on September 15, 2019 at 12:45 PM Posted in Married Life 0 7
Hi ladies, are there any military brides navigating getting your name changed and military ID at the same time? I’m a teacher and it’s hard for me to take extra time off to go somewhere during business hours. I’m getting married at Thanksgiving break, changing my name at Christmas break and won’t have my new SS card or drivers license before I go back to work, then my next business day off is Spring Break. What are you guys doing? Getting your new ID right away and changing your name later or waiting until your name change is complete to get your ID? Any advice welcome as I am new to all this. Thanks!

Hey Peggy! As a first step I would recommend you look up what documentation is required to get a name changed for a military ID. If they need proof of your legal name change first to issue a new ID, you may need to wait!

So I looked it up and they don’t need a legal name change to get it, but I don’t want the hassle of doing all the paperwork twice. Buuuut I also don’t like the idea of waiting four months to do it either! So I’m stuck.

Hmm I get you! So you have to weigh up the doing the paperwork twice versus waiting four months to do it. Which do you think would both you more? Neither is ideal, however, which one is the lesser of the two evils in your mind, if that makes sense?!

I didn't get my military ID until about 2 months after my wedding. I think you need to have your new SS and new license to get it. I had my new license, social security card, marriage license and I still had some issues getting my military ID. The lady in the office was trying to tell me I had to come back. Call their office in advance and ask!
