Michaels Invitation Kits

Melissa, on February 20, 2014 at 6:57 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 14

I have been reading up on Michaels invitation kits and calling around to print shops and just have a more questions before I commit.

I read reviews saying that laser printers were making the ink smear and that inkjet printers didn't have a problem. However when I called Kinkos they said it was the exact opposite and they have laser printers as does Staples. Has anyone gone to get theirs printed and had any issues? I don't have a printer at home and didn't want to spend money on ink to use my parents (which I heard a lot of pain about getting them done in printers at home).

Also has anyone specifically bought and sent out BRIDES white wave invitations because I noticed on the box it said "extra postage may be required" I don't want to buy double the amount of stamps especially if its just simply getting rid of the ribbon it comes with to lower the weight or thickness.

I did it, its just fine at home, with the orange BRIDES set, you have to use your printers pre set measurements, not their one you download, so i just measured the paper sizes and picked similar ones that were already in my printers size options(5.5 by 6.5 was my printers 5x7 in a landscape format. also, i didnt let them just pile up on top of eachother while printing, i removed each one and laid them out so they could dry separatley, but yes, if you tried to handle them immediately they would smudge so let them dry!!

Extra postage is required, because of the large size of the envelope, not because of the ribbon weight, and the little name cards dont easily punch out, you may want to use small scissors, because i punched them out and they come out fuzzy looking. also, it took me about three hours to print them all on our home printer, to finagle the paper sizing exactly, to download their template my printer didnt accept, to choose font sizes, and i cut out regular paper in the size of the insert to test first, and then held it up to the actual cards to see how it would lay, etc

Last question... I know there are templates so you can put what you want on everything, but I was thinking last night about the response cards and how some people have a guest others I am only invited them and there are food options. Will I be able to type in __ of __ attending and then have the ones that are 2 initial which food item they want so I know who got what??

Stuck between buying them at Michaels and having a place print them for me, just having a consultation at Kinkos and buying their paper and designs to do them or going with a company and/or Etsy? I don't want to spend much at all on invitations.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Also, the sticky foam stuff they give you is huge, youll want to cut each piece into four smaller pieces and put one at each end, instead of one huge piece in the middle, because the main insert is so long it made the edges flap around loose.

Also, I got super frustrated during the first hour because my printer wouldnt accept their template sizes, and I had to sit there and fiddle with the preset settings, so give yourself time! Its worth it in the end, and I still think I saved a bunch of money all in all. Oh, and if youre printing the envelopes, tuck the lip into the envelope so it doesnt stick in the printer. Hope that helps!

Wow see that seems like too much work and frustration and I would rather Staples/Kinkos figure all of that out for me. Luckily I already have address and return address labels printed so I don't have to print anything for envelopes. Why is it extra postage due to the size of the envelope I thought the post office cared about weight? Am I better off getting other invitations from a website then to not spend double in postage?

Idk, youll have to take a completed invite with all the inserts to a post office and weigh it, or you can check on usps.com and enter the size of the envelope and see. Wedding stamps are 70 cents this year for normal ones

We just did normal wedding rose stamps for save the dates and they were 46 cents each so we will be buying those again. I emailed the company to ask if they know for sure if it is extra postage or normal. I did that with Minted for my magnet save the dates and they were able to tell me it was normal postage so glad I was able to do magnets that didn't weigh too much.

I purchased one of the kits and I had no issues with my inkjet printer smearing. I downloaded the templates and used them. I DID change the font, the one on the template was terrible. The invites printed super easy. My only issue was with the RSVP cards. They started out printing correct and everything and I think my printer got mad at started grabbing the paper wrong and printing them funky. They did require extra postage, but that could have been because we did a wax seal on the envelopes. It was only 67 cent stamps or so. The templates are customizable so you could always change the wording on them.

Im using an invitation kit (wilton company). We swapped out tge cheap ribbon for something a little nicer. One of the pages gave us a fit trying to center the font from the template so we printed on plain white 110# paper.

I took to post office to weigh. Due to weight (size was okay) they were $0.70 after the postal increase.

In all the invitations cost about $220 to send 100 if I include postage, ink, kits, and extra paper and ribbon.

I did the kit and had to use the $.66 stamp (which i think is $.70 now?) the regular stamp was fine to use for the reply envelope. One thing I did notice is the envelope didnt hold it's seal well so we used a glue stick then an emblem sticker to hold it closed.

I did the kit. Went to office max and they printed them on the papers for us. All we had to do was save our templates on a USB drive, bring the paper and USB drive with us and told them what we needed. Was done in a few hours. The longest part of the process was tying the damn ribbons to the invitations. They all sent out with one stamp.

When all was said and done, we spent $67 total on out invitations. Smiley smile

I did all of mine just fine at home.

I did have to adjust the printer and page settings to 4x6 in order to print the 4x5.5 RSVP cards, but otherwise, it wasn't hard.

@Melanie I am so glad you posted about going somewhere other then home to have them printed! We are planning on doing this and I was just nervous that the paper wouldn't work at companies that have laser printers only. Your post makes me feel a lot better about going to do this. I will let you all know how it goes bring them to kinkos (or I guess now they are all fed ex haha)

I got my invite kit at Michaels and they were on clearance. I spent a total of 24 dollars and plan to print them my self at home. I tested a few and they seem perfectly fine. Personally, I really didn't want to spend to much money on something most people are just going to throw in the garbage.
